Manchester United have been put on injury alert after midfielder Marouane Fellaini was forced to make an early exit during Belgium's World Cup qualifying tie with Bosnia.

The tough-tackling midfielder pulled up during the match and was seen clutching his leg.

At that point the evening was over for the imposing star, who was promptly withdraw by manager Roberto Martinez.

The news will come as a great concern back at Old Trafford, with Jose Mourinho's side already short on numbers in the midfield department.

Star man Paul Pogba has already been ruled out indefinitely, while veteran Michael Carrick has also been unavailable in recent weeks.

A potential added injury to the growing list could not come at a worse time for United, who return after the international break for a crunch fixture with bitter rivals Liverpool.

The Red Devils are due to travel to Anfield to face Jurgen Klopp's side on Saturday, October 14.

United have made an unbeaten start to the Premier League season, despite their injury woes, and currently sit at the top of the pile alongside neighbours Manchester City.

Mourinho's men have taken 19 points from a possible 21 so far, and will be hoping to get one over on Liverpool in their own back yard in order to further assert their early season dominance.

Frustration will no doubt come out of the United camp should it be confirmed that Fellaini has picked up a lasting injury, with the match against Bosnia all but a dead rubber for the national side.

Belgium have already confirmed their place at the 2018 Russia World Cup, and were the first European team to do so.
