The midfielder stepped in as peacemaker when Jamaal Lascelles and Mo Diame came to blows
Lascelles had accused Diame of being 'lazy' before the confrontation on Thursday, which came just 24 hours before it was announced the skipper has signed a new six-year contract.
The 23-year-old has been tipped for an England call-up in recent weeks after scoring his side's winning goals against Swansea and Stoke.
After seeing his captain pen that new deal, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez spoke to Lascelles growth as a 'character'.
'As soon as I made the decision to make Jamaal the captain of Newcastle United, he rose to the challenge and he has developed as a player and a character,' said the Newcastle boss. 'He has proven himself to be a very good leader and a good role model too.'
