Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen is wanted back at former club Ajax one day by his biggest fan - his mother.

The Belgian international joined Tottenham in July 2012 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the Premier League's best defenders.

However his mum, Ria Mattheeuws, while wanting her boy to succeed further in England, admits she would like to see him play for the Dutch giants again.

She told news website HLN: 'I hope that he can remain healthy and injury-free, so that he can go further on this level, and if he can not, maybe at a lower level.

'It would be nice if he could go back to Ajax, but if he doesn't compete with Tottenham, why would Ajax succeed? With the national team I hope for a World Cup final in Russia, or world champion.'

Vertonghen, now 30, has played more than 150 times for Mauricio Pochettino's side as they established themselves in the Premier League top four.

He has a contract with the London club until 2019, although his future beyond that point is not yet clear.

Vertonghen is currently on international duty with Belgium, and will be playing at the 2018 World Cup with his country having already qualified for the finals in Russia.
