'It's based around me tonight, which I'm very humbled and appreciative of, but the charity are the main winners. The most important thing is the amazing charity, being here to support Nordoff Robbins – an excellent charity which uses music to bring people together.'

Alonso and Carragher delivered a speech honouring Gerrard at Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair, while Gerard Houllier, Phil Thompson, Roy Hodgson and Sami Hyypia were also among those present.

'We had so many experiences together, so many highs and a few lows as well,' said Alonso. 'He deserves this kind of award, he's a true legend of the game – that's why he is so praised and we appreciate him so much.'

Burnley boss Sean Dyche, ex-England manager Sam Allardyce and former Red Gary McAllister also attended the event paying tribute to Gerrard.

Gerrard was recognised for his services to football at the event - which is sponsored by music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins.

Former recipients of the Legends of Football award include ex-Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, Pele and David Beckham.

Gerrard is currently coaching his former side's academy team and last month led the young Reds to a 3-1 victory over Merseyside rivals Everton.

The former Liverpool captain made 710 appearances for his boyhood club after progressing through their academy - he then spent two years with Los Angeles Galaxy before retiring from football.

The Legends of Football event, which was previously known as the Football Extravaganza, has raised more than £7million for Nordoff Robbins.

John Charles was the first winner of the award which has been running since 1997. The likes of Brian Clough, Alan Shearer, Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson have also been honoured.
