Manchester City ace Vincent Kompany sent home by Belgium as calf injury rules him out of World Cup qualifiers

Vincent Kompany has been sent back from Belgium's training camp after he was deemed unfit to partake in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The 31-year-old was called up to the squad despite barely training with his club Manchester City since picking up a calf injury playing for his country against Gibraltar in August.

Belgium have already qualified for the tournament in Russia next summer but will be looking to finish their campaign off on a high note against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Cyprus.

Kompany has struggled to keep himself fit for much of the last three seasons but is still considered very much a key member of Roberto Martinez's squad, although he did lose his captain's armband to Eden Hazard.

He intends to retire from international duty after the World Cup, but has missed his last chance to play a competitive match before the tournament kicks off in earnest.

Similarly, he is also highly valued by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola but, in his absence, they have secured four consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League, leaving the Spaniard with a decision to make when Kompany returns to fitness.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku joined up with the Belgium squad as planned after deciding not to attend a court hearing in Los Angeles following his arrest in July over an excessive noise complaint.
