The Ivory Coast international netted eight goals in 38 appearances last season and is the Eagles' star man.

Had he have been fit for their first four Premier League fixtures perhaps Frank de Beor would have had a glimmer of hope before his untimely dismissal.

With their Premier League fortunes seemingly set to continue down the same path under new boss Roy Hodgson, and with a run of tricky fixtures, Palace will be desperate for Zaha to return to the side as soon as possible.

'The sports science medical people are hoping by the time the international break comes around he will be fit to join in training and have a week's training, and then we will see if he is fit enough to play against Chelsea when the break is over.

'That is our hope and that is the goal we are working towards, but with injured players we have to be careful and patient, and take advice from the medical people and Wilf himself, because he is a good player and we want him on the field.'

Hodgson's side have a unfavourable run of games and face two difficult trips to Manchester to face inform side's City and then United before Zaha can even be considered to play.
