Burnley 2-2 Leeds (AET - Penalties: 3-5): Stuart Dallas scores decisive spot-kick to send Championship leaders into Carabao Cup fourth round

  • Hadi Sacko finished coolly after being played through by Pablo Hernandez
  • Hosts awarded late penalty after Robbie Brady was fouled by Gaetano Berardi
  • Chris Wood sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to level the scoreline
  • Pablo Hernandez restored lead from the spot after James Tarkowski's foul
  • Brady curled a last-minute free-kick into the top corner to take tie to extra-time

The roar that greeted Stuart Dallas' winning penalty for Leeds was appropriate for a sleeping giant being wakened by new manager Thomas Christiansen.

The Championship leaders enjoyed a famous win at Turf Moor roared on by a full allocation of 2,200 supporters in the away end with those who couldn’t get a ticket watching at Elland Road where the cup-tie was beamed back live.

Those viewers enjoyed a dramatic finale to their War of the Roses. Four substitutes scored in the final 10 minutes of normal time and at the end Leeds goalkeeper Andy Lonergan saved from Burnley skipper James Tarkowski in the penalty shoot-out while all five of his team-mates netted.

‘It says a lot about the strength of my squad,’ said Christiansen.

‘This club should be in the Premier League and that’s what we are working on.’

The visitors bossed the first 80 minutes of the tie but missed chances through Scott Arfield, Kevin Long and Ashley Barnes.

The game erupted into life when Hadi Sacko outpaced the Burnley defence to score but Clarets £15million record signing Chris Wood levelled against his former club after 89 minutes from the spot.

Incredibly, there were then two further strikes in injury-time.

Leeds went ahead with a 95th minute penalty from Pablo Hernandez after Tarkowski had momentarily held Kemar Roofe’s shirt.

‘It was only for a millisecond,’ complained Burnley boss Sean Dyche.

It didn’t prove decisive though with Robbie Brady curling in a beaut from a 97th minute free-kick after Ashley Westwood had been fouled by Ronaldo Vieira.

After extra-time failed to produce a winner, Tarkowski’s miss from the spot was critical with

Ezgjan Lasogga and Stuart Dallas completing the visitors triumph by converting consecutive spot-kicks in the new ABBA format.

‘My only gripe was that we didn’t take our chances,’ said Dyche, whose side lost to non-league Lincoln in the FA Cup last season.
