Crystal Palace are set to accelerate their search for a new manager this week after Frank de Boer's disastrous start to the season continued at Burnley on Sunday.

Sam Allardyce and Roy Hodgson are two of the leading candidates under consideration with De Boer on the brink of becoming the first managerial casualty of the Premier League season after his team slumped to their fourth successive defeat of the season at Turf Moor.

The Eagles are the first top-flight side in 93 years to lose their first four games without scoring a goal - and the awful stretch has left the Dutchman facing a crucial 48 hours as he fights to save his job.

Chairman Steve Parish launched into a staunch defence of his stewardship on Twitter on Sunday night amid criticism from supporters.

But it is looking increasingly likely he will dispose of another manager as De Boer's future hangs by a thread.

'We are four games in,' Parish tweeted. 'It's a terrible start but we have to stick together. People are frustrated. I'm frustrated, so are the management and players.

'I think I'm defending everyone at the club who's working their a*** off to turn this round. Football teams lose games, it happens. We know we are better than this. I'm happy for people to vent at me.

'I'll stand my record up against any chairman we've had in 118 years. We've spent £70million since January and sold one player for £2m plus spent another £10m on loan players. Let me ask you a question, who has the better squad, us or Burnley?

'We just can't keep on spending and spending. Ninety per cent of fans wanted (Mamadou) Sakho, which was always going to limit what we could do.'

Despite Sunday's loss, Palace provided signs of improvement against Burnley. But sources claim it is a matter of 'when not if' De Boer is fired.

Palace would prefer to have De Boer's replacement lined up before making a final decision to part with the former Ajax boss.

And it seems the lack of outstanding candidates for the position is providing De Boer with a stay of execution.

There is a desire from members of the Palace hierarchy for Allardyce to make a return to the club he surprisingly left at the end of last season after successfully leading the club to Premier League safety during his six month stint in south London.

Sportsmail understands initial overtures to the Allardyce camp have already taken place. However, the former England manager may be reluctant to return to Selhurst Park given he only left in the summer.

Hodgson is also an option for Palace. The 70-year-old has been out of work since England's disastrous Euro 2016 campaign.

Hodgson was born a stone's throw away from Selhurst Park and the manager's job at his local club could appeal to the former Inter Milan boss.

Allardyce and Hodgson both have substantial experience of Premier League football, which will attract Palace chiefs.

It remains to be seen whether a De Boer will be in charge for next weekend's crucial clash against Southampton.

But it seems De Boer's immediate fate will depend on whether Palace can identify the Dutchman's successor this week.
