Manchester United have strike force of Romelu Lukaku, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial this season... but how do they measure up to other Old Trafford forward lines in the Premier League era?

  • Manchester United have started the Premier League season in stunning fashion
  • Jose Mourinho's side have scored 10 goals and not conceded a single one so far
  • It's perhaps no wonder given the formidable attacking weapons they have
  • Romelu Lukaku was signed from Everton for £75m over the summer
  • He joined Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in the United squad
  • Mourinho has also secured services of Zlatan Ibrahimovic for later in season

Manchester United have made a blistering start to the season as Jose Mourinho's masterplan to build a title-winning team begins to fall into place.

With 10 goals scored and zero conceded in their opening three Premier League fixtures, United are starting to resemble the formidable force of old.

Mourinho sanctioned the £75million purchase of Romelu Lukaku from Everton back in July and the Belgian has started life at Old Trafford with three goals in his first three matches.

United already had speedsters Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in their attacking arsenal and will welcome back Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored 28 goals last season, from injury at the end of the year.

With Lukaku, Martial, Rashford and Ibrahimovic at his disposal, Mourinho will have an awesome attacking force.

But how does this United forward line compare to others during the Premier League era? We take a look.

1992-1994: Cantona/Hughes/McClair

Flashback to the very beginning of the Premier League era and Alex Ferguson's United would claim the first two titles in 1992-93 and 1993-94.

Their principal striker was the Welshman Mark Hughes, a trusted goalscorer in both spells at Old Trafford and the man who powered United to those two title wins with 15 and 12 goals respectively.

Scot Brian McClair also chipped in with important goals, while the capture of Eric Cantona from Leeds United in November 1992 would prove a Fergie masterstroke.

The Frenchman scored nine times in United's first Premier League season and then contributed 25 in total the following year, which also saw United win the FA Cup.

Between them, they launched United into the pre-eminent force in the early Premier League era.

1998-1999: Yorke/Cole/Sheringham/Solskjaer

This was a season that will live forever in the memories of all United fans who witnessed it.

Ferguson's all-conquering side completed the unprecedented Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, scoring dozens of goals in the process with their attacking style.

United already had Andrew Cole, a prolific forward ever since his transfer from Newcastle United in January 1995, and he would score 24 in all competitions during 1998-99.

Cole formed an unstoppable strike partnership with Dwight Yorke, who'd arrived from Aston Villa just before the season and repaid his £12.6m fee with 29 goals.

Astonishingly, United then had top-quality strikers Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to bring off the bench or rotate into the team when Cole and Yorke needed a breather.

Solskjaer contributed 18 goals and Sheringham five that season, with both scoring in stoppage time as United completed the Treble with a dramatic win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

2002-2004: Van Nistelrooy/Solskjaer/Forlan/Saha

Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy, who arrived at United from PSV Eindhoven in 2001, was a goal machine for the club, scoring 150 times in 219 appearances.

In the 2002-03 campaign, in which United won the title, he scored an astonishing 44 times in all competitions, and backed that up with 30 the following season.

Solskjaer scored 15 in the first of those seasons, but his powers were on the wane by this time and the signings of Diego Forlan and Louis Saha were designed to replace him.

Neither Forlan nor Saha could match Van Nistelrooy's stunning goal return, but they did chip in with some significant strikes every so often.

2007-2009: Rooney/Ronaldo/Tevez/Berbatov

This was the era of Ferguson's fourth great side at United as they re-established themselves at the very pinnacle of European football as well as dominating at home.

Key to their considerable success around this time was the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo, who became more and more of an attacking threat with each passing season.

In 2007-08, when United won the Premier League and Champions League Double, the Portuguese scored 42 times in all competitions and followed that up with 26 the next campaign.

He contributed many more to the likes of Wayne Rooney, who produced some of his best football in a United shirt to register 18 and 20 goals respectively.

Given the sheer volume of matches, United found excellent back-up in Carlos Tevez, whose 19 goals in 2007-08 proved significant.

He scored a further 15 the next season and was assisted by Dimitar Berbatov, who signed from Tottenham for £30.75m and chipped in with 14.

It was an era of very exciting attacking play at United and with this strike force, they had the power to outgun any opponent.

2012-13: Van Persie/Rooney/Hernandez

Sir Alex Ferguson's final season at United and what would prove to be the last time they won the Premier League title - something Mourinho is desperate to address.

The signing of Robin van Persie from Arsenal, for £22.5m, was a superb decision as his 26 goals fired United to the championship.

A true predator inside the penalty box, capable of a terrific variety of goals, the Dutchman scored at a ferocious rate.

Rooney was still on song and contributed 16, but United also unearthed a real gem in Javier Hernandez, another penalty-box poacher, who scored 18 in all competitions.

2017-18: Lukaku/Ibrahimovic/Martial/Rashford

Of course, it remains to be seen whether United's current attacking quartet can fire them back to title glory.

While Ibrahimovic won't have a chance to replicate his stunning form of last season until December at the earliest, the other three have made flying starts.

There were fears that Mourinho would not be able to keep all of them satisfied but the quantity of matches this season should offer them all plenty of opportunities.

Lukaku is a muscular centre forward with the capability to dominate defenders and has an outstanding track record throughout his young career.

Rashford and Martial offer lightning pace, skill and a decent chance conversion rate, while Ibrahimovic really needs no introduction.
