A deal for Dragovic was completed shortly before the 11pm cut-off point, after sorting things out for a position that had become problematic.
Shakespeare has Harry Maguire and Wes Morgan to call upon but Robert Huth is still working his way back to full fitness.
Yohan Benalouane has fallen well down the pecking order after making a rash challenge in pre-season that angered the Leicester manager.
Dragovic has Champions League and Europa League experience with Leverkusen and Dynamo Kiev and is a regular in the Austrian team.
