Saturday's clash with West Ham was Mitrovic's first league appearance of the season for Rafa Benitez's newly-promoted side.
Having being benched for their defeats to Tottenham and Huddersfield, the 22-year-old marked his first league start of the campaign with a goal.
Mitrovic's late effort added to earlier goals from Ciaran Clark and Joselu. But he now faces another month out of club action following his elbow on Lanzini at St James' Park.
