Crystal Palace are on the hunt for a new manager after becoming alarmed to the start made by Frank de Boer

  • Frank de Boer has made an awful start to life as Crystal Palace manager
  • Senior figures have already started searching for a possible successor
  • Steve Parish is understood to have thought about approaching Sam Allardyce
  • But Allardyce, who managed Palace last season, has ruled out a return

Crystal Palace are searching for a new manager in the belief they have made a mistake with their appointment of Frank de Boer.

The Dutchman has made a disastrous start to his tenure with defeats in their opening three Premier League game, their failure to score adding to the sense of anxiety.

Senior figures at Selhurst Park have been alarmed by De Boer’s style of management and have been actively discussing alternatives despite emergency talks between the former Ajax and Inter Milan boss and chairman Steve Parish.

Parish is understood to have even explored the possibility of persuading Sam Allardyce to return, although on Tuesday the manager who quit at the end of last season citing health issues ruled out such a move.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Tuesday, Allardyce said: ‘I’ve been relaxing this summer watching the interesting transfer market and being associated with any club at this early stage of the season would not be of any interest to me at the moment.

‘I have just had a trip to Hawaii watching from afar and I went to watch Manchester United on Saturday and I wouldn’t associate myself with any job at this moment in time.

‘Three games into the Premier League season, it is a little hasty when people talk about you coming back into football.

‘At this moment in time, I am very comfortable in my life. My time in the Premier League for many, many years has been tremendously exciting and I have enjoyed every minute, but having a break from football is the right thing for me to do.

‘I am just watching Premier League football with great interest, watching how it is panning out, and not living under the pressures that every manager in the Premier League is living under today.’

Sources close to De Boer say he has been given no assurances over his future but is planning for the trip to Burnley on September 10 in the hope of winning over the club's supporters and hierarchy.

'No points after three games is not good, it has created a lot of negativity and there is pressure,' said one source.

'But you have to remember that they had only one point after three games last season.

'Frank is trying to build with the way he thinks is right for the club. He knows what he is doing but it takes time to change a philosophy.

'Look at the Swansea result - it was poor, yes, but there is a reason Swansea have always done well against Palace, because they play football. That is what Frank wants to bring.

'But for now he needs points, that is what people see and what is causing the negativity. He is training and working hard and planning as normal, but you never know in football.'
