Tottenham 1-1 Burnley: Chris Wood scores in injury time to deny Spurs their first victory at Wembley this season after Dele Alli put them in front

The drummer has gone but the thumping sound in Mauricio Pochettino's head remains. This Wembley thing just won't go away.

It must feel like he has tried everything to kill off those punchlines, those barbs, those observations that his team cannot get across the line once they step over that threshold.

In the case of this weekend, it meant doing away with the musician whose drum kit was hooked into the stadium sound system to manufacture some atmosphere against Chelsea last Sunday. Everyone had a good giggle at that.

But dropping the gimmicks didn't work here and nor, evidently, did anything else, with Spurs leading through Dele Alli before Chris Wood slapped them right back down to size with an equaliser two minutes into stoppage time.

The fact that Burnley could call a £15million striker off their bench says everything about the absurd depth of the Premier League and its mad wealth. But that argument meant nothing to Pochettino on Sunday night as he mulled over how Tottenham's dominance was not turned into points.

This was a game they should have won and one that might just have interrupted those pesky Wembley questions. But not now, not when the tally shows they have played 12 games at the national stadium and won only two, having lost at home last weekend against Chelsea and drawn this time against Burnley. As Pochettino is forever reminded, Spurs were unbeaten at White Hart Lane last season.

Of course, settling-in troubles were expected, but the stadium subject is already a sideshow and it is easy for these topics to worm into the collective neuroses of a football dressing room.

They shouldn't, but they so often do, even if this game was obviously not drawn because of drummers, pitch dimensions or the gentler aspects of the stands. It was drawn because Tottenham's finishing was off colour; it was drawn because Robbie Brady hit a pass of some brilliance between Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld. Their positioning was a little suspect and Wood made the most of it, finishing beautifully on his league debut, a week after arriving from Leeds.

Truth is, beyond that moment, Spurs were good. Not brilliant, but good. They just couldn't hit a Wembley wall from five yards, so bad were they in front of goal. That is often the real curse of good teams that don't quite get to great – sometimes, in games they should win, not enough shots go in.

This was one of those, and so off Pochettino stropped, throwing his water bottle down as he left the pitch. He knows that five points is not much of a return from three games when ambitions are high.

He had made only one change to the side beaten by Chelsea, bringing Son Heung-min for Victor Wanyama, who has picked up a minor knee problem. He also put £42million club-record signing Davinson Sanchez on the bench and tweaked the system, ditching the 4-3-2-1 used in defeat against Chelsea and going with 4-2-3-1 and a fuller frontline.

If the plan was to swamp Burnley with attacking possession, then it worked. They had 68 per cent of the play and 28 shots. Solid, encouraging, a platform.

But they were just as good on paper against Chelsea and lost. This was a similar tale – just five of those shots were on target.

In order, Christian Eriksen shot wide, Harry Kane nudged one over and Eric Dier misdirected a header.

The best of the lot fell to Kane 38 minutes in after a Ben Davies cross. He took a touch with his right foot, took a moment too long to get steady and by the time he pulled his trigger James Tarkowski was in position to deflect the shot wide. Pochettino was scowling.

Burnley, meanwhile, had their own chances. Inside six minutes, Brady forced Hugo Lloris to scramble, leap and reach with a dipper to the far post and Tarkowski headed over midway through the half. Threatening, but not enough to overly concern Spurs.

The 'home' side broke through four minutes after the break, with Alli bundling over the line at the second attempt after an Eriksen corner, and from there Spurs should have been clear.

Instead Kane missed three excellent chances, two of which were well saved by Tom Heaton. Still no Premier League goals in August in any of his seasons, which really is a flimsy stick with which to beat such an exceptional striker. He will come good, because he always does, but how Pochettino could have used one of his goals here.

Instead, his team was left vulnerable to the sucker punch and indeed it came, just moments after the same Brady-Wood pairing had forced Lloris into a crunching interception. The pass and finish for the goal were excellent, and the point a happy reward for a team that was so poor on the road last season but has taken four points from Chelsea and Spurs in this campaign.

For that reason, Dyche ended his afternoon manic and waving. He loved this trip. Pochettino, meanwhile, was fit to blow. Wembley, a funny kind of place.
