Wayne Rooney joins the Premier League's 200 club but who could reach the milestone next?

  • Wayne Rooney scored his 200th Premier League goal against Manchester City
  • He joins Alan Shearer as the second player to reach the scoring landmark
  • Here Sportsmail looks at the contenders who could join them in the 200 club

Wayne Rooney became the second player to score 200 Premier League goals on Monday night with his first-half strike against Manchester City.

He joined Alan Shearer, who scored 260 goals during his 14-years in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.

Shearer took just ten seasons to score his 200 goals, whereas Rooney has required seven more than that to reach the milestone. That is not to detract from the achievement. There are only three players currently playing in the English top flight who have scored more than 100 goals.

Here, Sportsmail looks at which players could one day join Shearer and Rooney in the 200 club.

Harry Kane

The Tottenham striker, 24, has already scored 78 Premier League goals, hitting more than 20 goals in each of the last three seasons.

In the 2014-15 campaign, his breakthrough season at White Hart Lane, Kane got 21 goals. He followed that tally with 25 goals in the 2015-16 season, which secured him the Premier League's Golden Boot award for the first time.

Kane became the sixth player to retain the Golden Boot award last season after scoring 29 goals in 29 games.

If he continues his record of scoring at least 20 goals a season, Rooney and Shearer could be joined by another England international.

Romelu Lukaku

The Manchester United striker has made a great start to his Old Trafford career, scoring three goals in two games, including two goals on his debut against West Ham.

At Everton the Belgian striker reached double figures each season with his highest tally in the 2016-17 season. He scored 25 goals in 38 appearances, losing out on the Golden Boot by four goals to Kane.

With Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford supplying the 24-year-old, he could quickly add to his 88 Premier League goals.

Jermain Defoe

The Bournemouth striker has scored 158 Premier League goals and is the closest player to the 200 mark.

The 34-year-old has made 470 Premier League appearances and is now playing for his fifth Premier League side.

His highest tally in a season was in the 2009-10 campaign when he scored 18 goals for Tottenham, including five in Spurs' 9-1 win over Wigan.

Defoe made his Premier League debut for West Ham in 2001 and was prolific in spells at Sunderland and Portsmouth.

He signed a three-year-deal with the Cherries in June, but given his age scoring another 42 goals may be beyond his reach.

Sergio Aguero

The Argentinian has scored 123 goals in the Premier League in 183 appearances at Manchester City.

Like Kane he has scored more than 20 goals in each of the last three seasons.

He won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2014-15 campaign after notching 26 goals.

Aguero wrote his name into City folklore with his winner in stoppage time against QPR to clinch the league title in the 2011-12 season.

At 29, the striker is 77 goals short of the milestone and has made his intention to finish his career back in his native Argentina clear. Given time the 200 is well within his reach but there are doubts over future at the Etihad under manager Pep Guardiola.

Peter Crouch

The Stoke striker is the most recent player to enter the Premier League 100 goals club after scoring against Everton in February 2017.

The 36-year-old became the oldest player to reach the landmark when he slotted home Marko Arnautovic's cross.

He scored 12 goals, his highest total in a season, for Southampton in the 2004-05 campaign which earned him a transfer to Liverpool. In his three seasons at Anfield he netted 22 goals.

Crouch is now into his seventh season at Stoke but is increasingly being used as a substitute by Mark Hughes and another 100 goals seems a long way off.
