One of the biggest mysteries of the summer transfer window – and there have been a few – is the persistent rumour that Chelsea are looking for a left wing-back, to relegate Marcos Alonso. Danny Rose, of Tottenham, has been mentioned.

Yet Alonso has been a vital performer for Chelsea since arriving less than a year ago, as the 2016 transfer window closed. He defends reasonably well, he gets forward impressively – most of all, he scores important goals.

A game fitting for a Wembely final...

Except this is just the first of 19 Premier League matches at the national stadium this year - and let's hope they are all like this!

Chelsea have brushed aside concerns of a crisis to defeat Spurs at Wembley (again) and kickstart their title defence.

As for Spurs, despite playing well, in the big tests they have once again failed to deliver.

Plenty of reaction to come on the homepage but that's all from me here. Thanks for following and cheerio.

FULL-TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Chelsea
Marcos Alonso's double helped Chelsea defeat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Wembley
17:50
Tottenham Hotspur substitution

90+1min: There will be four added minutes at Wembley Stadium, where Harry kane has been booked and Vincent Janssen has replaced Trippier.

Marcos Alonso celebrates restoring Chelsea's lead at Wembley Stadium
17:46
GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 CHELSEA

88min: What a finale at Wembley! David Luiz wins the ball in midfield and after releasing Marcos Alonso into the box, the full-back manages to squirm a near post shot under Lloris.

17:46

86min: Not this time as Chelsea clear but Spurs are all over the Blues now as they chase a winning goal. Toby Alderweireld is booked following a foul.

Michy Batshuayi scored an own goal to give Tottenham an equaliser
17:44

85min: And from a similar position where Alonso scored a first half free-kick, Spurs have won a set-piece after Eriksen is fouled. They couldn't could they?

17:41
GOAL! TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1-1 Chelsea

82min: Tottenham strikers have laboured in front of goal, so a Chelsea one helps out instead as Michy Batshuayi turns a Christian Eriksen free-kick into his own goal with a header.

17:39
Tottenham Hotspur substitution

80min: Desperate times call for desperate measures and Tottenham's second change sees Moussa Sissoko - still yet to score for Spurs -  replace Ben Davies.

17:37
Double Chelsea substitution

79min: Double change for Chelsea as Pedro and Michy Batshuayi come on to replace Willian and Morata.

17:35

76min: Back come Tottenham with corner No 13 - lucky for some - but not for Spurs as Chelsea clear once again. They are basically glorified goal kicks for the Blues now.

Chelsea's Alvaro Morata look on after his shot is deflected narrowly wide of the post
17:33

73min: Now Chelsea hit the post! Willian is allowed space to shoot 25 yards out but his low drive although creeps past Lloris smashes off the face of the woodwork.

17:30

71min: It was Spurs that made the attacking change but it's Chelsea suddenly with a spring in their step as Victor Moses rifles just over the bar at the near post.

Tottenham's Son Heung-min replaces Eric Dier as Mauricio Pochettino looks on
17:28

70min: Antonio Conte is also now considering a switch, with Pedro putting on his protective face mask and getting ready to come on.

Meanwhile the Blue sbreak on the counter, with Morata's deflected strike creeping just wide of the post.

17:27
Tottenham Hotspur substitution

68min: First change for Tottenham as Son Heung-min comes on to replace Dier as Spurs up the anchor in the midfield.

17:25

65min: Chelsea have gone ultra defensive in this second half and while Tottenham are dominating, you are not really getting a sense they can score here. There are not many options on the bench for the hosts either in terms of finding players that could change that.

17:21

62min: No is the answer, because Alvaro Morata - perhaps looking for a way to get involved in this match - is back defending to head clear the cross.

Chelsea's Willian (left) and Tottenham Hotspur's Jan Vertonghen battle for the ball
17:20

61min: A chance here for Tottenham as Dele Alli is tripped by N'Golo Kante out wide on the left outside the box. Can Spurs test Chelsea with a set-piece?

17:18

58min: Antonio Conte, back in a suit this weekend as opposed to the tracksuit, is on the edge of his touchline frantically gesturing at his players to push up. Chelsea are soaking up the Tottenham pressure. But how long can they maintain this for?

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane looks on as his shot strikes the post
17:15

55min: Spurs have had 71 per cent of the ball in this second half as they put Chelsea under increasing pressure. Kieran Trippier's first time low cross from the right looks destined for Kane to tap home only for Cesar Azpilicueta to get in front and make a vital clearance.

17:11

52min: More fortune, this time for Tottenham as Jan Vertonghen is booked following a reckless challenge on Victor Moses at knee height. A stricter ref may have sent him off there and it wouldn't have seemed an over the top reaction.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte speaks to N'Golo Kante during the game
17:10

50min: It's all Tottenham in this second period so far. Chelsea can't get out their half.

Ben Davies's cross is cleared by Alonso but it cannons off Andreas Christensen before, from a Chelsea point of view, falling fortunately into the arms of Thibaut Courtois.

17:06

47min: Spurs start the same way they finished the first period - on top.

Kane meets a corner with a diving header but fails to guide it on target before it hits David Luiz and the ball falls to safety.

PLAYER WATCH: Tiemoue Bakayoko (Chelsea)

It's a debut for Tiemoue Bakayoko, and while the midfielder hasn't been sparkling he hasn't done too much wrong.

The midfielder has helped provide a screen for a Chelsea back three without Gary Cahill although you expect there is more to come from the summer signing from Monaco.

Deja-vu for Tottenham...

...it's Wembley, it's Chelsea and the north London club are losing.

Mauricio Pochettino's side may have ended the half well on top but Chelsea have had the best chances and narrowly deserve their first half lead.

And this is meant to be the champions in crisis. If Tottenham can't beat them now, then when can they?

Tottenham Hotspur fans react as their side fall behind against Chelsea
16:49
HALF-TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Chelsea
Marcos Alonso's strike gave Chelsea a first half lead at Wembley Stadium
16:46

45+1min: Chelsea are rather hanging on a bit at the end of the first period - of which there will be three added on minutes.

16:45

44min: Good end to the half for the hosts as Courtois dives to his left to parry away a deflected Ben Davies strike.

16:43

42min: Off the post! Kane's August jinx strikes again as the strike collects a Dele Alli pass before cutting inside and striking the woodwork from inside the box. By far Tottenham's best chance in a frustrating first half for the hosts.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino looks on from the touchline
16:42

41min: Spurs look set to win a free-kick 30 yards out after Victor Wanyama is tripped, but although advantage is played it's certainly not gained as Eriksen shoots wildly wide.

16:40

39min: Eriksen's whips a wicked delivery across goal, but no Spurs player can get a vital touch as the ball zips just past the far post.

16:39

37min: Possession building again for Tottenham but still no sign of a Spurs breakthrough, although now David Luiz is on a yellow card after raising his arm to prevent Christian Eriksen running into space.

16:35

34min: It feels very much like a derby now as the game is becoming littered with crunching challenges. There is a brief delay while Tiemoue Bakayoko receives treatment following an aerial tussle with Dier.

Chelsea's Marcos Alonso scores the opening goal from a free-kick against Tottenham Hotspur
16:32

31min: And Eric Dier becomes the second after a poor challenge on Luiz, which leads to a booking for the Spurs midfielder.

16:31

30min: This is a bit better from Spurs though as Kane is denied by Courtois from a tight angle before the striker goes down under pressure from Alonso.

Spurs fans want a penalty but there was really nothing in it and the referee agrees.

Meanwhile Antonio Rudiger becomes the first player booked.

16:28

27min: Spurs respond by winning a free-kick themselves but Chelsea clear it behind for a corner, which they also successfully deal with.

Tottenham still labouring a bit in attack, they still haven't created anything major.

Marcos Alonso celebrates after his free-kick gave Chelsea the lead at Wembley Stadium
16:24
GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 CHELSEA

24min: A very good chance! The Spurs wall is helpless and so is Lloris as Marcos Alonso bends a text-book free-kick into the top corner.

16:24

23min: The old White Hart Lane maybe history but Spurs fans have brought some of it with them as the fans chant in the name of former stands 'Park Lane' and 'The Shelf Side.'

Chelsea win a free-kick just outside the box though after Dele Alli fouls David Luiz. Good chance this...

16:21

20min: Not quite as close from David Luiz who after collecting a squared Willian pass on the edge of the box scuffs a shot way, way over the bar.

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur players line up before the game at Wembley Stadium
16:20

19min: Good effort from Spurs. Mousa Dembele tries his luck from 25 yards and it causes enough of a threat for Courtois to have to tip over for a corner - which Chelsea successfully defend.

16:19

18min: Spurs have grown into this game a bit but aside from Christensen's brain fade, the Chelsea defence really hasn't been tested that much.

16:16

15min: But now Chelsea are making mistakes at the back! Andreas Christensen fails to deal with a ball played over him as he throws a mis-kick, but from a very tight angle Dele Alli's shot is well off target.

Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane (right) takes on Chelsea's N'Golo Kante at Wembley Stadium
16:14

13min: Hugo Lloris might not get away with too many of those as he sees a clearance charged down by Morata. The ball though falls kindly for the Spurs keeper though who takes at the second attempt.

16:11

10min: A first shot on target for Tottenham as Harry Kane drops deep to collect the ball, but his 25-yard drive is straight at Thibaut Courtois, whose parried clearance is less than convincing - but does the job.

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata headed wide with a brilliant chance early in the game
16:10

8min: Spurs seeing more of the ball now but Chelsea are defending in a compact manner, denying the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli space to play in.

As a result Spurs are passing the ball around rather aimlessly, which is the football equivalent of scratching your head while looking for answers.

16:07

5min: What a chance for Chelsea! Alvaro Morata is unmarked inside the box as he meets a Cesar Azplilcueta cross, but the striker can only head wide when he should be scoring - never mind hitting the target.

As for Spurs Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld need a discussion over who should have been marking him.

Chelsea's Alvaro Morata (left) vies with Tottenham Hotspur's Toby Alderweireld for the ball
16:04

3min: What an atmosphere inside Wembley. Nearly 70,000 Spurs fans - double the size of the old White Hart Lane are singing the 'Spurs go marching in' song, but so far it's the Blues applying more of the attacking pressure.

16:03

1min: Just a minute gone and already Chelsea test Spurs with two crosses. Victor Moses' first flashes across goal while the recycled ball into the box is easily claimed by Hugo Lloris.

Out come the players at Wembley Stadium...

There is a sea of Spurs flags all round the stadium as the players make their way out. This may be a neutral venue, but the north London club have done all they can to at least make it look like a home fixture - and there is a huge cheer for the Spurs players as the players take to the pitch.

Aaron Mooy curled home a spectacular winner early in the second-half.

But it's a result that once again exposes Newcastle's weaknesses and surely they need to bring in some new faces in the two weeks before the transfer window closes.

Tottenham Hotspur will make another three signings before the transfer window closes, according to former midfielder Graham Roberts.

Club-record buy Davinson Sanchez, who arrived for £42million from Ajax earlier this week, is Tottenham's only new recruit so far this summer.

But Roberts told talkSPORT on Saturday that at least three more players will join the club in the next seven days.

What to make of those teams?

That's a very interesting team selection by Antonio Conte. Very defensively-minded, perhaps a 3-5-1-1 system with Willian set to sit in behind lone striker Alvaro Morata.

David Luiz is likely to add a little bit more steel to the midfield and Tiemoue Bakayoko will make his debut having been passed fit to play. Tellingly, no trace of Eden Hazard yet, not even on the bench.

Tottenham line up pretty much as expected although no Kyle Walker-Peters at right-back, with Kieran Trippier slotting back in. Perhaps Mauricio Pochettino thought a game of this magnitude would be too much for the youngster.

BIG MATCH STAT PACK - Part Two

Chelsea haven’t suffered a defeat in both of their opening two games to a league season since 1973-74, with one of those two defeats also coming against Burnley.

The last reigning top-flight champions to lose their opening two league games of the following season were Aston Villa in 1981-82.

Since beating Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final, Spurs have won just one of their last nine games at Wembley Stadium (W1 D2 L6). That win came in a registered ‘home match’ in the Champions League group stages against CSKA Moscow last season (3-1).

Harry Kane’s next goal for Tottenham will be his 100th in all competitions for the club – though he’s failed to score in any of his 11 Premier League appearances in the month of August.

Rob Draper: Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham have to lift their sights beyond winning a trophy and set them on the Premier League title and the Champions League.

In a bold statement of intent — after finishing third, then second in the Premier League in consecutive seasons — the Tottenham manager has laid out his agenda for the critical years ahead.

BIG MATCH STAT PACK - Part One

This will be the first-ever Premier League match played at Wembley Stadium and it will be the 58th different stadium to host a game in the competition.

Tottenham Hotspur went an entire campaign unbeaten at home in the league last season - the first time they’ve done this since 1964-65.

Chelsea have lost just two of their last 17 games in all competitions against Tottenham (W8 D7 L2).

Spurs haven't lost a Premier League London derby at home under Mauricio Pochettino (W9 D4 L0).

Spurs have won 14 consecutive home league games; their joint-longest ever winning run at home in league competition (also 14 wins in October 1987). The longest home winning run by a top-flight team was set by Liverpool between January and December 1972 (21 wins).

Inter Milan manager Luciano Spalletti has admitted that Chelsea could make a move for versatile Italy star Antonio Candreva before the transfer window closes.

Chelsea have already spent in excess of £141million on signings this summer, but manager Antonio Conte is not yet happy with the size of his squad.

Conte wants more options and 47-time Italy international Candreva, who can play in multiple positions, is seen as a suitable candidate.

Rob Draper: Antonio Conte uses laughter disarmingly well. On Friday he broke into a manic and threatening giggle when Diego Costa's comments about being treated like a criminal were put to him.

But a month ago, sat in Beijing's Intercontinental Hotel, having just signed his new two-year contract and insisting he would stay for longer, his mirth was of a less-intimidating kind.

He was discussing John Terry's ambitions to manage, endorsing his former player's capabilities. He was asked whether he thought Terry might one day be Chelsea manager.

After all, it was suggested, there would probably be a vacancy in two years' time.

It's the match we've been waiting for this weekend!

It's definitely a case of saving the best until last in the Premier League this weekend.

A London derby beneath the Wembley arch that brings together last season's top two and a couple of fierce rivals. Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

So many intriguing sub-plots here. How will Tottenham get on as they begin life at the national stadium? Will they be able to keep up with their rivals having spent relatively little this summer?

And Chelsea. Are they truly in turmoil? Can Antonio Conte solve the unrest and unite the factions within his camp?

We'll get a few clues to all this from 4pm when this match kicks off.

Tottenham Hotspur branding welcomes fans to the stadium at Wembley this afternoon.

In arguably the clash of the weekend, Tottenham host Premier League champions Chelsea at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino's men will be looking to make a positive start at their new home but the Blues are desperate to avoid a second defeat on the trot after losing 3-2 against Burnley on opening day.

Antonio Conte's side are without Cesc Fabregas and Gary Cahill who saw red in week one.
