  • Carragher insists Chelsea must avoid defeat against their London rivals

Jamie Carragher has called on Chelsea to relax to avoid a repeat of their last Premier League title defence.

Antonio Conte's Chelsea side are already under pressure after they lost 3-2 against Burnley in their first Premier League game of the new campaign on Saturday afternoon at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have endured a frustrating summer so far, selling Nemanja Matic to league rivals Manchester United for £40m, while it was also revealed that Antonio Conte sent Diego Costa a text telling him that he was no longer in his plans.

In the 2015-16 season, the term after Chelsea lifted the English top flight title under Mourinho in his second spell at the club, the Blues finished 10th following a turbulent campaign which saw the Portuguese boss get the sack.

And former Liverpool defender Carragher told Sky Sports that Chelsea must not panic early on to ensure they don't go down the same route this time round.

Carragher said: 'If you go back two years, first game of the season they were champions and they played at home to Swansea. They drew the game, not a great result, obviously had the situation with the club doctor and all of a sudden after one game, it felt like Chelsea were under pressure and it felt like people were fanning the flame.

'This story seemed to get bigger and bigger with players, with Jose Mourinho, to eventually losing his job. They have lost one game at home.

'What they should be thinking now is "right, relax, we've got two games until the transfer window is finished". In that time, Conte needs a couple of players.'

The Stamford Bridge outfit face London rivals Tottenham at Wembley next Sunday in what is already a huge game for both sides.

And ex-England international Carragher believes that Chelsea must avoid defeat at all costs.

Carragher added: 'It looks like they need strengthening, especially in wing back positions but next week is at Tottenham, the mentality for Chelsea next week is go there, don't get beat, get your point.

'Everton at home the following week, try and get your three points. Go into the international break with four points. You'll maybe be three points off the top, not the end of the world and sort of stop this tidal wave of negativity as we saw with Costa today in the press, we have seen Conte, the way he is speaking to the press you know something is not right with him and the board.

'I think that has got to stop and just remember it is one game, a bad defeat but get your head back on and as Conte said, we don't want another Jose season. Well that's the way to try and fix it.'
