Manchester United 'have to win the league' this season, insists Gary Neville as Jose Mourinho claims Red Devils squad is his 'most liked ever' and better than last season

Gary Neville has piled the pressure on his former club Manchester United by insisting they must go all out for the Premier League title this season.

Jose Mourinho failed to secure a top four finish in his first season as United boss, though was able to triumph in the League Cup and the Europa League, securing passage to the Champions League via the latter.

But Neville, a former household name at Old Trafford, now believes United are in a position to win English football's top prize once more this season, particularly after the investment they have made into the team.

Mourinho was full of hope for his side this term, claiming in his programme notes before the clash with West Ham that they are an improvement on last term.

'As I have told them all recently, during my long career I have never worked with a group I like as much as I like them, Mourinho said.

'Our three new signings - Victor, Romelu and Nemanja - are all very lucky to have joined a group like this, because it is easy to work with them. I believe that we are a better team than last season.'

Since Mourinho's arrival money has been spent endlessly at Old Trafford, with Paul Pogba returning to become the most expensive player in world football last summer, before striker Romelu Lukaku was signed for £75million in July.

The Red Devils have also added £30m defender Victor Lindelof to shore up their back line, while parting with £40m to recruit Nemanja Matic from rivals Chelsea.

Given the overhaul of the squad and mass spending, Neville believes the underachievement of recent season must now be forgotten, and the current crop of stars push for the title.

‘You can’t just drop your expectation because they haven’t won it for a couple of years. They have to win the league. Mourinho has to win the league here,' Neville said on Sky Sports, prior to Newcastle's clash with Tottenham.

‘The money that’s been spent, his own personal expectations and what he’s always delivered has been titles, so I would say United have to approach this season to win the league.

‘I don’t think it’s good enough to say “they’re going to get back into fourth”. That isn’t an ambition when you’ve spent the money that’s been spent and amassed the players that Mourinho has now amassed,' he added.
