Leicester captain Wes Morgan tips Jamie Vardy to terrorise Premier League defences again after opening account against Arsenal

  • Jamie Vardy scored twice in Leicester's 4-3 defeat by Arsenal on Friday night
  • Wes Morgan feels Foxes will have striker back to his razor sharp best this term
  • He said: 'Defences are terrified of his pace which is fantastic for us'
  • Morgan also takes heart despite Arsenal loss which was down to minor errors

England manager Gareth Southgate now knows first hand Jamie Vardy has not lost his goalscoring touch after watching the Leicester City striker score twice in the opening match of the season.

Vardy, a former Arsenal transfer target, disarmed the Arsenal defence as Leicester led twice before succumbing to two late goals.

But that outcome will not bother Southgate, who looked on from the Emirates Stadium directors' box.

And City captain Wes Morgan believes Vardy, 30, is showing signs he still has the pace and form that helped Leicester win the title two seasons ago and made the former non-League striker an international and Footballer of the Year.

Morgan said: 'I don't think there is anyone in the Premier League as direct as Vards.

'Defences are terrified of his pace which is fantastic for us as we have him on our side and we can utilise it as much as possible.

'It is his strength but he doesn't make those runs for the sake of it, the timing of his runs is perfect and his control and finishing is on point as we saw against Arsenal.

'That is his attribute; playing on the shoulder and getting in behind onto balls we put down the sides. That is his strength. And as long as he is playing we will play to his strengths.

'I'm sure he will be delighted to get off the mark.

'It is great for us, him finding the net early in the season and hopefully it will lead to more.'

Morgan and his men have the relatively easier task of a home match against newly promoted Brighton this Saturday.

And the Jamaican international believes defeat at Arsenal is nothing to worry about.

He explained: 'It was bitterly disappointing after leading 3-2 up with 10 minutes to go, but it was one of those games, end to end, where there were lots of chances for both teams and we didn't get the results we wanted.

'There are still a lot of positives to take out of the game, scoring three goals away from home is one.

'The goals we conceded were hard to take. You can break them down and there was probably a bit of naivety that we need to tidy up on but sometimes it takes a while to get into the swing of things and we will get better.'

Morgan is also adapting to his new central defender partner Harry Maguire, a £17m signing from Hull City, who fitted in effortlessly to the Leicester system.

Morgan added: 'I thought we worked well. We knew what Arsenal are about, a passing team that work the ball well and are always a threat. We had our work cut out and on the whole, we did well but little errors cost us goals.

'We now need to look back at the game and iron out those little errors and with 10 minutes left to see out the game when we are ahead.'
