Fabian Delph is in the middle of a stand-off with Manchester City that could affect his chances of playing for England at next summer's World Cup.

Pep Guardiola has given the green light for City to sell the 27-year-old midfielder with the club willing to accept offers of £14million as they try to reduce the size of their squad.

However, Delph is insisting he wants to go on loan rather than commit himself to a permanent transfer, which is what City would prefer.

The end result is that the player still remains at The Etihad with only a fortnight left of the transfer window and unless the impasse is broken he faces a season frozen out of the first-team picture.

The energetic Delph won the last of his nine England caps in 2015 but current manager Gareth Southgate still views him as a possible to take to Russia next year because he offers something different to the rest of England's midfielders.

Delph settled in well at City following a protracted on-off transfer from Aston Villa two years ago but after initially saying he'd learned more from Guardiola than any other manager in his career, the pair's relationship cooled when the City boss lost patience with Delph's lack of availability due to injury.
