Real Madrid 2-1 Manchester United: Romelu Lukaku nearly fluffs his lines, Steven Gerrard lays into Paul Pogba and did Casemiro stray offside? Eight things you may have missed

  • Real Madrid beat Manchester United to secure Super Cup victory in Skopje
  • Romelu Lukaku made it third time lucky after two costly errors in front of goal

  • Jose Mourinho met Italian refereeing legend Pierluigi Collina ahead of kick off

Real Madrid picked up the first trophy of the new European season with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the Super Cup.

Goals from Casemiro and Isco helped Zinedine Zidane's side to victory on Tuesday, despite Romelu Lukaku's first competitive goal for United mid-way through the second half.

If you were too busy to keep an eagle-eye on proceedings in Skopje, fear not. Sportsmail's DANIEL MATTHEWS was on hand to tell you about somethings you may have missed.

CR7 the fashion icon

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the biggest stars in world sport, a footballing hero for millions and a fashion icon for many more.

He has broken innumerable scoring records on the pitch and even launched his own underwear range off it. But in Skopje on Tuesday the Real Madrid forward showed he really is a man of the people by joining the ultimate sartorial trend – sandals and socks.

Ronaldo was left on the bench by Zinedine Zidane, having only returned to training on Saturday. He didn't train with his team-mates ahead of the game, but did emerge onto the pitch with some of his fellow squad members fully socked-and-sandaled.

Zinedine Zidane's side win historic first meeting between two European giants

Real Madrid and Manchester United are two of the most decorated clubs in European football.

Between them, the two footballing giants have secured 15 European Cup triumphs and won 53 league titles.

But Tuesday night's clash in Skopje was the first time they have ever met in the Super Cup final. In fact, it was the first time they have met in a major European final. Ever.

Third time lucky for Romelu Lukaku as he nearly fluffs his opening bow

Jose Mourinho blooded all three of his major summer signings in Skopje as Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic were all given their first taste of competitive football in a United shirt.

It was also the first chance to show that the £145.7million United invested in them did not go to waste. And it was one Lukaku looked to have fluffed.

During the first half, the United No 9 had a moment to forget as Ander Herrera dispossed Toni Kroos and looked to sprint through on goal. Lukaku was offside at the time of the tackle but, rather than allow his team-mate to run clear, the forward instead ran onto the ball and brought the attack to a premature end.

Then, moments after Isco doubled Madrid's lead, the Belgium forward was gifted a glorious chance to atone for his earlier error and open his United account. But after Keylor Navas saved Paul Pogba's header, Lukaku could only spoon his shot over. Fortunately he made no such mistake on the hour mark when Matic's shot was parried into his path...

Steven Gerrard questions 'poor' Paul Pogba's team-ethic

Much like his good friend and new team-mate Lukaku, Paul Pogba had a first-half to forget in Skopje.

Madrid created the better of the chances in the opening 45 minutes and headed into the break 1-0 up. During half-time ex-Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard didn't mince his words when asked what he thought of the Frenchman's performance.

'I think he's been poor, if we're brutally honest,' he said. 'His decision making out there in the first half hasn't been good. I think he's been a bit individual out there rather than thinking of his team-mates in the first 45.

Ed Woodward and Florentino Perez come face to face

Any fears that United or Madrid would be plagued by pre-season cobwebs were quickly ended in Skopje as the two European giants played out a high-quality and fiercely-competitive Super Cup.

And in the stands the atmosphere appeared a little frosty, too, as United chief Ed Woodward sat just one place down from his Madrid counter-part, Florentino Perez, in the directors box.

Relations between the two clubs — and two of the most powerful men in world football — have been strained in recent years, notably thanks to David de Gea's botched move to the Bernabeu in the summer of 2015.

Real Madrid continue Spain's Super Cup dominance

Goals from Isco and Casemiro means that since 2009, eight of the last nine winners of the Super Cup have now come from Spain.

Real Madrid (three times), Barcelona (three times) and Atletico Madrid (twice) have all triumphed in the season's curtain raiser since Zenit St Petersburg won the title with victory over... Manchester United.

Bayern Munich, who beat Chelsea in 2013, were the last side not from Spain to win the title. And in that time, there have been three all-Spanish finals, too.

Jose Mourinho meets his refereeing match

The Manchester United manager is rarely afraid to make his feelings known to officials before, during and after matches.

And on Tuesday, the Portuguese ran into probably the most iconic referee of them all, none other than Pierluigi Collina. The Italian retired from duty back in 2005 but is now the chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee - making him the most powerful official in world football.

And Mourinho appeared in no mood to complain this time, as the combative Portuguese and the iconic referee shared a joke ahead of kick off.

...But did he reason to complain shortly after?

Casemiro's first-half goal set Zidane's side on the way to victory in Skopje and helped ensure Jose Mourinho did not collect his third trophy as United boss.

But should the goal have stood? The midfielder did excellently to turn home Dani Carvajal's pin-point cross. But replays suggested he may have strayed offside in the build up.

It was mightily close and Casemiro was given the benefit of the doubt by the officials, meaning the goal stood.
