Nemanja Matic has had no time to get used to life in Manchester as the United new boy has been thrown straight into the thick of things on his 29th birthday.

Manchester United's £40million signing took part in Tuesday morning's training session as Jose Mourinho put his players through their paces ahead of the final friendly of pre-season.

Mourinho's men face Italian side Sampdoria in Dublin on Wednesday before taking on Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup next Tuesday.

Matic became United's third summer signing on Monday when Chelsea confirmed his departure to Old Trafford.

The Serbia international has put pen to paper on a three-year deal at United and they have the option of extending his deal by a further year.

Matic is short of match fitness but could make his first United appearance against Sampdoria, and he has revealed his joy at completing the switch.

'I am delighted to have joined Manchester United,' he told the club's website. 'To work with Jose Mourinho once again was an opportunity I couldn't turn down.

'I have enjoyed my time at Chelsea and would like to thank the club and the fans for their support. I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and to start training with them.

'This is a very exciting time for the club and I am looking forward to playing my part in creating more history for this great club.'

Mourinho added: 'Nemanja is a Manchester United player and a Jose Mourinho player. He represents everything we want in a footballer; loyalty, consistency, ambition, team player.

'I would like to thank him for his desire to join us because without that, it would be impossible to have him here. I am sure our players and supporters will love him. A big welcome to our new No 31.'

Fellow United new boys Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof also took part in the session ahead of United's trip to Dublin on Wednesday.

Mourinho's side go into the match high in confidence after a comfortable 3-0 win over Norwegians Valerenga on Sunday.

Marouane Fellaini, who Mourinho insists will not be leaving the club this summer, Lukaku and academy graduate Scott McTominay netted as United recorded their fifth win of pre-season.

United defeated LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, Manchester City and Real Madrid - via a penalty shootout - during their tour of America before returning to Europe for their final two games ahead of the new campaign.
