From Neymar to Cristiano Ronaldo, the summer's most anticipated transfer moves and how likely they are to go through before the window shuts
- Like every summer transfer window, this has been dominated by big moves
- PSG are chasing big stars while Barcelona want a Premier League midfielder
- English top flight sides are also embroiled in transfer sagas of their own
- Sportsmail has taken a look at the moves and if they are likely to go through
Transfer sagas are as key a feature of the modern summer as sun, barbecues and posting holiday snaps on Instagram.
Clubs want players. Other clubs are not keen to sell their best players. Money is thrown around, promises are made and, eventually, heads may or may not be turned. And eventually a move is either completed or a player pens a new deal.
Sportsmail has taken a look at the most anticipated ongoing transfer sagas and decided how likely the moves are to go through.
Alexis Sanchez to Paris Saint-Germain
Arsene Wenger is insistent that Alexis Sanchez will not leave. But his departure from the Emirates has looked likely since the moment Arsenal missed out on the Champions League. Wenger says Sanchez will not be allowed to join Paris Saint-Germain, even though they will not pose a direct threat to Arsenal unlike also interested Chelsea. With a year left on his deal and no extension on the horizon, it seems more likely than not he will leave, Wenger's protests not withstanding.
Likelihood rating: 8/10
Arsenal insist Alexis Sanchez will not leave but it is hard to see him remaining at the club
Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid
It is never a good sign for your long-term future at a club if a manager drops you a text saying you're not in his plans. That optimism then drops significantly if you decide to tell the press all about it. Diego Costa is leaving Chelsea, that much is for sure. He is only willing to move to one club - Atletico Madrid. The only problem is that Atletico have a transfer ban hanging over them. There will be a solution - in football there always is - and this one will surely be done before the window ends.
Likelihood rating: 10/10
Diego Costa has been open about his desire to leave Chelsea for Atletico Madrid this summer
Neymar to PSG
As a flashy Brazilian with marketable looks and the skills to boot, Neymar is one of the most coveted players on the planet. There are few clubs that could reasonably force Barcelona into selling Neymar, which would cost a world record fee, and one of them is mega-rich PSG, who are looking for a star to build their side around. Barca's players do not want Neymar to leave, but the Nou Camp club seem more willing to sell than they should really be.
Likelihood rating: 6/10
Paris Saint-Germain are chasing a world record transfer to sign Barcelona forward Neymar
Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona
Even with the Neymar situation as it is, there is still a sense that Barcelona get what they want. And it has been obvious that they have wanted Philippe Coutinho for a long while. The only issue is that Liverpool have made it very clear that they will not countenance the sale of the Brazilian maestro. And the top Premier League sides just have the finances to stop moves like that from going through. This could be one of those sagas that run until late in the window.
Likelihood rating: 5/10
Barcelona tend to get what they want but might struggle to snap Philippe Coutinho up
Sergio Aguero to Chelsea
There has been an odd sense at Manchester City that Pep Guardiola has never really liked Sergio Aguero that much. And the arrival of Gabriel Jesus seemed to confirm that, with the youngster immediately put into Guardiola's starting line-up. But Guardiola has insisted he wants to keep arguably City's greatest ever striker. Aguero himself does not seem to be agitating for a move and Chelsea probably do not need another striker of Aguero's quality. Expect him in City blue come the first day of the season.
Likelihood rating: 3/10
Sergio Aguero may not be first choice at Manchester City but he is likely to stay at the club
Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United
The news of Cristiano Ronaldo's interest in leaving Real Madrid sent shockwaves through the football world. After all, this was one of the world's best two players agitating for a move. That talk has died down, especially with regards to any links to former club Manchester United. This has 'Ronaldo signs new contract' written all over it.
Likelihood rating: 1/10
Talk that Cristiano Ronaldo might leave Real Madrid has calmed down in recent weeks
Marco Verratti to Barcelona
Barcelona once boasted the best midfield in world football by a long way. A lack of new players coming through from La Masia and the ravages of time have put an end to that. Marco Verratti seems ideally suited for a slot in the middle of Nou Camp club's line-up, but PSG will not want to sell one of their better players to a team they would consider to be a rival. It's hard to see Barcelona not eventually pushing this one through.
Likelihood rating: 7/10
Barcelona want Marco Verratti to be a key cog in a revitalised central midfield area
Ross Barkley to Tottenham
Last season it seemed as though the ball was in Ross Barkley's court. This summer it looks as though Everton have moved past a player who has just one year remaining on his contract. Wayne Rooney and Davy Klaassen, two players who can play in the same role, have come in. Gylfi Sigurdsson is a target. Spurs have wanted Barkley for a while and he seems suited to Mauricio Pochettino's system. All this really needs is for Daniel Levy to get the cheque book out, which means it could take a while yet.
Likelihood rating: 7/10
Tottenham are keen on Ross Barkley, who may not have a role at Everton much longer
Riyad Mahrez to Roma
It was obvious last season that Riyad Mahrez's mind was on other things than Leicester City. This summer it has emerged that the Foxes promised to let him go for the right bid. As it stands, Roma are the biggest club in for the Algerian. It seems as though wealthy Leicester have no compulsion to let him go for less than their valuation, but why would the Olympic Stadium club not meet that at some point?
Likelihood rating: 8/10
Riyad Mahrez had an agreement with Leicester that they would let him leave this summer
Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool
At one point it seemed as though Virgil van Dijk's transfer was done and dusted. Then it broke that Southampton were reporting Liverpool for allegedly tapping up the defender. The transfer seemed dead in the water. But Van Dijk has now asked to leave and is training alone, meaning Southampton essentially have to let him go. The Dutch defender is desperate to play under Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool are just waiting for a nod from the south coast club now, telling them it is fine to bid again, and then this one should go through.
Likelihood rating: 7/10
Liverpool should have some confidence that they can sign up Southampton's Virgil van Dijk
