Manchester United unveil new home kit with button-up collar and Wayne Rooney among the models for adidas shirt despite his uncertain future

Manchester United have unveiled the new home kit that Jose Mourinho's men will wear for their return to the European elite in the Champions League this season.

In the third year of their 10-year £750million deal with adidas, the EFL Cup and Europa League winners will sport a new shirt that features a button-up collar design which the manufacturer says 'pays homage to some of the classic kits from the past'.

Club captain Wayne Rooney featured in Monday's unveiling, alongside team-mates including adidas pin-up star Paul Pogba, despite his uncertain future at Old Trafford.

David De Gea, Jesse Lingard, Luke Shaw and Phil Jones featured in a club photo shoot used to unveil the kit, while Pogba, Juan Mata, Daley Blind and new signing Victor Lindelof were used for marketing shots released by United.

Adidas say the new shirt 'mixes classic football looks with terrace-inspired details like contrast-colour cuffs and a granddad collar'.

The inclusion of the black and white stripes on the sleeves is said to be an attempt to make sure that 'United always wear their colours on their sleeves'.

United will wear the kit for the first time in pre-season against Los Angeles Galaxy on July 15 and it will continue to feature as they enter the Champions League for the first time since 2015.

Mourinho's team secured passage back into European football's elite competition last season by beating Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm despite their sixth-place Premier League finish.

They are due to enter the Champions League at the group stage, with the draw in Monaco set for August 24 and the first round of fixtures on September 12-13.

It remains unclear whether Rooney will feature for United this season with his influence at the club waning and Mourinho's desire to strengthen in midfield and attack for the new campaign.

The former England captain has fallen down the Old Trafford pecking order but offers for his services have not been forthcoming with clubs reluctant to approach his £300,000 per week wage figures.

United have already shown off the black, patterned away kit that they will wear on the road for the new season.
