John Terry enters formal talks with Aston Villa

SIMON JONES: John Terry has opened formal talks with Aston Villa and will join up with the Championship club on Monday.

The 36-year-old Terry had considered retirement and, despite offers from Premier League clubs such as Bournemouth, Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion, was reluctant to play against his beloved Chelsea in the top flight.

Rafa Benitez is growing frustrated but after the departure of Graham Carr, Nickson has been given the key role.

Benitez backed the move and said: 'Steve has done an excellent job in the scouting department at Under-21 level and I am very confident that he will bring his many strengths to this new role, improving and building on our first team recruitment strategy, as well as that at all levels throughout the club.'
