Cristiano Ronaldo - Real Madrid

After the Spanish state brought a £13million tax-fraud case against the Portuguese superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo has informed Real Madrid of his intention to leave the club. Paris Saint-Germain lead the chase, after owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi held talks with agent Jorge Mendes the night of the Champions League final in Cardiff.

However, United made serious attempts to re-sign Ronaldo in the summer of 2013 and he retains a genuine love for the club. Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward would love to bring Ronaldo back to Manchester. Relations with Mourinho soured towards the end of the pair's time together at Real Madrid, but a shared will to succeed could re-unite the pair.

The problem, however, is that Ronaldo may just be posturing to ensure he is backed relentlessly by his employers during this tax case and Madrid will demand over £200m.

Alvaro Morata - Real Madrid

The 24-year-old Spanish forward scored 20 goals despite not being Real Madrid's first-choice frontman last season.

Manchester United are the favourites to sign him this summer as they search for replacements for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Jose Mourinho took him on three pre-season tours when he was a youngster at Real Madrid and also gave the striker his debut in Real colours.

Eric Dier - Tottenham

The England international is high up on Mourinho's wishlist and United have been watching him extremely closely for the past six months.

Tottenham are determined not to be seen as a feeder club to the top teams and Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep his best players. Dier is particularly important, not only due to his quality and versatility, but also his dressing room popularity and close friendship with Dele Alli.

However, we can expect this one to develop in the summer months with United prepared to spend over £40m for Dier. The question is whether Tottenham will soften their stance as the cash comes to the table. At this stage, they are refusing to even name a price for a player they want to keep in north London.

Nemanja Matic - Chelsea

The Chelsea hardman started the vast majority of games under Antonio Conte last season but his form fell away a touch towards the end of the season. He is a £35m option that may be more feasible than luring Dier and Mourinho was also keen on Matic last summer.

Chelsea are working on a deal for Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and that may see Conte cash in on Matic.

Ivan Perisic - Inter Milan

The Italian club's asking price is currently considered excessive for the 28-year-old Croatian. The midfielder wants to join Mourinho at Old Trafford but United have been quoted just short of £50m for the player.

United remain hopeful of sealing the deal but it will require some compromise from Inter and perhaps some agitation on the part of the player to see it over the line.

Kylian Mbappe

Monaco want a world-record fee for 18-year-old forward who was the outstanding teenager in the Champions League this season. They have already turned down bids in excess of £80m from Arsenal and Real Madrid. United have scouted Mbappe repeatedly.

Monaco will attempt to keep the player in the principality for one more season and he may yet agree to that as it would give him the time and patience to continue his development.

However, money talks and Real Madrid will likely return with an offer some way beyond £100m this summer to seal the deal.

James Rodriguez - Real Madrid

The Colombian playmaker came to the fore at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but has not thrived to the extent expected since signing for Real Madrid subsequently.

He is determined to leave the Spanish capital this summer but links with United have, so far, come predominantly from the end of Rodriguez's representatives rather than from the Old Trafford club themselves.

There is a suspicion that United's name may be being used to create a market for the 25-year-old.
