Manchester United flop Shinji Kagawa is set to be offered a new deal by Borussia Dortmund after impressing in his second spell at the Westfalenstadion.

Dortmund's sporting director, Michael Zorc, confirmed that the Bundesliga giants would be opening contract talks with the Japan international in the coming weeks.

Kagawa's current deal expires at the end of next season and Borussia boss Thomas Tuchel is keen to tie the midfielder down to a long-term contract.

'There will be talks with him and his agent,' Zorc told Kicker. 'We will see in what direction it goes.


'We've noticed that he played well. Shinji did turn it around and delivers strong performances under pressure.'

Kagawa joined Dortmund from Japanese side Cerezo Osaka for just £300,000 in 2012 and quickly became one of the most highly-rated midfielders in German football.

A big-money move to Manchester United soon followed but after two underwhelming seasons at Old Trafford, Kagawa moved back to Dortmund.

After overcoming early-season injury problems, Kagawa has hit a purple patch and has provided two goals and four assists in his last nine appearances for Tuchel's side.
