That's all for this week...

Enjoy the football this weekend and make sure you get your questions in for next week.

Same time, same place. Have a good week.

Last one guys and girls... Gary Neville said that Arsene Wenger is ‘arrogant or naive’. Is that fair? Do you agree? As an ex-player I can guess what you will say. Mark in Devon

Arsene Wenger has always wanted to play with a certain style, and there’s no doubt Arsenal have had success with that during his tenure. But as we’ve seen recently, that style has not been working in terms of winning the Premier League.

I think that shows that either you believe too much in your players or there is an element of arrogance that your squad will conquer all. With Wenger I think it’s much more the former. One of Wenger’s greatest management skills was the belief he showed in you as a player. He might be guilty of overestimating his players at times and I guess that can look like stubbornness and arrogance from the outside.

But every manager in the league has to have an air of arrogance and a great belief in what they are doing. The egos of the managers in the Premier League are huge and the only thing that proves who is right and wrong is winning trophies.

Wenger has nurtured this squad and they have delivered two FA Cup wins now, but last season they lost the title in the first few weeks of the season and they have to make sure they don’t do that again this time. Already you can hear critics sharpening their knives.

Some of those players are indebted to Wenger for the faith he has shown and now they need to do more to repay that. The manager also needs to provide direction so if the balance is not quite right then he is failing them as well.

Against Liverpool it was a worry to see Brendan Rodgers’ side, which has a lot of new faces, look more like a team than the Arsenal group that has been together for a long time. The two who stood out for Arsenal were both defensively-minded – Petr Cech and Francis Coqeulin – and I’m sure Arsene doesn’t take as much joy as I do when I see Coquelin make a strong tackle. He would much rather see five or six quick passes that lead to a goal.

That can appear like arrogance from the outside but that never transmitted itself to the dressing room. You only felt great belief from him that you and the team could do the job. But Arsene is not foolish – he is aware more than anyone that if Arsenal don’t perform it is him more than anyone else who will cop the flak.

Who do you think will get more goals this season - Benteke or Giroud @wooden_head

There was not enough movement from Giroud on Monday whereas Benteke was a real handful – I’m still trying to work out how he didn’t score.

Right now he looks like a really good bit of business but Liverpool had been very average until the Arsenal match.

Benteke has been a shining light for them and will be a regular whereas Giroud may come in and out of the team more often.

Romelu Lukaku looks unplayable at the moment. What do you think? Steven in London

I’m not sure he is to be honest. At times he still plays like a pussycat when he needs to play like a tiger.

I’ve read he has had a few personal problems which I can sympathise with but it still seems to be flashes with him. One day he is terrorising defences and the next he’s nowhere.

If I was on his team I’d be winding him up for fun to get him going. When he feels like it he has a run at people but he should be doing that every time.

I think his close control could be better and he got little change out of Kompany and Mangala at the weekend.

I think that’s where Christian Benteke is ahead of him – he is more aggressive. If Lukaku was more consistently aggressive then he’d be a better player. Sometimes Everton don’t go into him often enough or early enough and that can hinder him.

But Roberto Martinez has to encourage him to take on defenders more like he did at Southampton because he can embarrass them. He shouldn’t waste the ability he’s got.

He was disappointing for Belgium at the World Cup and he’s now got the competition of his mate Benteke at Anfield.

In a funny way Benteke going to Liverpool could be good news for Everton as it might free up Lukaku - you never want to be in people’s shadows on Merseyside.

Is Charlie Austin worth a gamble for Arsenal? @lindsay3_chris

I don’t think so. If Arsene Wenger is only talking about bringing in players to take the team to another level then I don’t think he’s that player.

Charlie is a proven goal scorer in the Premier League but I don’t think he’s the one to take Arsenal up a level.

Would you sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic before the window closes? Big Dunc, Glasgow

He would add to any club. The big question is can you afford him? I’m not sure Louis van Gaal would take him – to say there would be a bit of a personality clash would be an understatement.

But that is the biggest issue with Zlatan, he is a very difficult person to manage. I don’t think his talent is in question – he is a varied, powerful, strong and incredibly skilful player.

Maybe the competition in the French league doesn’t keep his mouth watering as it did in Spain or Italy. But I do think coming to the Premier League would do him the world of good.

He’s always been ambitious and likes to tick boxes around Europe. Now he might like to do it here. But unless he takes a drop in wages, it’s hard to see where he’ll go. I think the only place I could really see him would be Chelsea, especially if Diego Costa’s hamstring blows up.

Kevin Nolan leaving West Ham on a free transfer. Did you ever play against him and how has he done in his career? Lots of West Ham fans don’t rate him. Marc, Bedford

He’s certainly been a good pro over the years. Sometimes players get heavily associated with a manager – every time Brian Clough went somewhere he seemed to take the same group of players with him and it’s the same with Sam Allardyce and Kevin Nolan.

Yes, he played in a very physical way but he was intelligent and scored plenty of goals. He was always very disciplined and played the way his manager wanted him to. I played against him at Bolton and he was always a problem at set pieces.

He felt like Sam’s brains on the pitch. I don’t think Allardyce did him any favours though, he earned that.

He can still do a useful job for somebody, as long as his legs are still there. He is certainly a no nonsense person and I suspect he may not have seen eye to eye with Slaven Bilic. He may well have thought: ‘I don’t need this at this stage of my career’ so he’s off.

What do you make of Spurs and their transfer performances? Henry in Stevenage

I think Toby Alderweireld was an astute bit of business and I’m sure Pochettino’s contacts at Southampton helped, so he took advantage of that.

I’m sure between now and next week there will be a lot of names linked with Tottenham, there always are, but it’s interesting that Pochettino seems more willing to take a chance on the young English players at Tottenham.

I’m intrigued to see Eric Dier’s long-term development in midfield and Delle Ali scored last weekend as well. Pochettino almost seems English in the way he has been developing some of England’s best young players at Southampton and now Tottenham.

But in terms of transfers I do think they have slipped a long way behind Arsenal again. They have a fantastic stadium in the works but as Arsenal know that is such a long process.

And with that stadium in the offing they are mindful of their transfer spend. Tottenham almost have to copy the Arsenal model from 10 years ago and trust in their young squad for a few years. Because with the costs of the stadium, the fans might have to get used to not pushing the boat out.

It will be years before they are self-sufficient with the new stadium, even though work is already underway. It is a huge cost to the club and it took Arsenal seven years before they could buy Ozil for £42m after they built the Emirates.

I think that could have a significant impact on their transfer policy and Tottenham fans might have to be patient.

Chelsea paid £21m for Pedro who has 13 major trophies and won the World Cup. Surely Saido Berahino can't be worth £25m? Christine Moore, Essex

Well, no he isn’t. But obviously that is what West Brom think he is worth to them and they are determined to keep him.

I do think he’s developed a lot as a player and he has been working very hard for the team, particularly when playing in wide positions.

He handles the ball really well and he is a natural goalscorer – there aren’t too many of those around at the minute.

Most of the top teams are still looking for a striker, even though the trend now is to only play with one up top in your team.

But that’s partly why the price is so high – teams want firepower and he is convincing people he is good enough. That’s market forces at work – as soon as you show some talent your value can soar.

Calum Chambers had a nightmare on Monday. Can he make it at centre-half? Clare, Edinburgh

I think so. The problem is his confidence has clearly taken a major dip. When he first played for Arsenal he was so confident in possession and on the ball. His decision making was excellent and it’s clear he had a lot of talent.

But he hasn’t become a bad player overnight. Currently it’s just in his head. On Monday sometimes he crowded the full back too much and he always wanted to play out of the back.

With Liverpool pressing high, you don’t want to feed that tactic but he misplaced too many passes. He would have been better off hitting the odd one long to bypass Liverpool’s press.

But after the performance he will not want to think about it too much. Hopefully he will get plenty of support this week and work hard on the training ground to improve things. But there’s no doubt he’s got the talent to become a very good player.

City look like they're going to sign Kevin De Bruyne. If they do, do they win the title? Rob Evans, New York

Manuel Pellegrini is obviously trying to put together the strongest possible squad so they don’t drop their really high standards.

You could look at the City team and think why change? But City’s transfer deals prove there is no room for any complacency.

It showed last week when they signed Otamendi to provide competition for Kompany and Mangala, even though the two have them have both started so well.

De Bruyne could easily take Jesus Navas’s place or even Raheem Sterling’s, so City are keen to strengthen. But it’s interesting that he didn’t make it at Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho says he is in it for the long-term at Chelsea but he is still looking for players to bring him instant success. He could have waited to see how De Bruyne developed but he doesn’t hang around waiting.

If the deal goes through it is incredible money and probably enough to secure Wolfsburg’s future for at least a couple of years, which is incredible for just one player.

Will John Stones get a game at Chelsea? Sandra Ellis via email

That’s my fear for him. But I get the feeling Jose Mourinho is not too happy with John Terry or Gary Cahill.

Stones could come in straight away and stay in but he’d have to perform. But he’d always back himself to do that. If he does move to Stamford Bridge he will be under the microscope more than ever.

He is young and ambitious and will be looking at what’s going on at Chelsea – seeing one of their all-time greats coming to the end of his career. There’s no doubt Stones will want what Terry’s got – titles, Champions League football, always challenging at the top.

He could also learn a lot from Cahill and Terry, particularly at set pieces.

But I do think another year of regular football at Everton would be good for him. The club paid £3.5million for Stones and that looked a lot of money at the time. They backed him and have brought him through so now they will be hurt that he wants to leave.

Does handing in a transfer request ever help a player? Dave, Woking

It’s a tricky one because you’re not sure what’s happened behind the scenes.

A club may have publicly taken a strong stance but then an offer comes in that’s so good they cannot refuse it. If they revert and sell, then they look foolish.

That’s when they might discuss a transfer request with their player – that way the player gets his move, the club gets their deal but they still look good from the outside. The player might suffer in the eyes of the fans but the deal still goes through.

But sometimes a club can be absolutely clear and tell a player he’s going nowhere. That’s when they might come in and demand a move to try and force it through. That’s when things can get nasty.

I never got into this kind of situation because I let my contracts run out but with John Stones it’s different. I was surprised that Roberto Martinez played him last night, almost as if he is deliberately ignoring the situation.

But after the game the body language was not good. He wanted to talk to Stones and Phil Jagielka after a poor display but neither looked too impressed. Jagielka should be rested for these kind of games anyway but Stones looked as if he didn’t want to take anything on board.

Rooney can break England and United's goal scoring records this season. Is he England's greatest ever goal scorer? Eric in Leeds

In modern times he has to be. He’s had the benefit of modern science to keep him playing and also playing a lot of fixtures. But his success is still down to his drive and determination.

He was a man when everyone else was a boy and he developed so quickly. I was injured when he came on against Arsenal for Everton and scored all those years ago. That’s obviously why he’s had such a good career – he didn’t have to play me that day otherwise he would never have scored!

But I did play against him as a young kid and you could instantly tell he was a top player. I played against Ryan Giggs as a youngster as well and it was the same feeling. They were exceptional and the genie was instantly out of the bottle.

This season he is going to be United’s top dog so he’s got a clear path towards Bobby Charlton’s record there and he could do the same for England. Comparing him to England’s greatest is always hard.

Bobby Charlton was an incredible goalscorer and played a similar number of games to Rooney, but he scored his goals from midfield. Gary Lineker’s scoring ratio was much better than Rooney’s but then Jimmy Greaves scored 44 goals in 57 appearances, an incredible figure that takes some beating.

But as as a player you’ve just got to keep pushing to score goals. Wherever people want to put you, you can’t contribute to that discussion. You do your talking on the pitch and Rooney’s goals put him up there with the greats.

What we want to see from Wayne now is a purple patch through this season. He needs to show he is No 1 for England and United and at the end of it he needs to have a great tournament at Euro 2016.

Wayne has only had one great tournament but that was 11 years ago. You need more if you really want to cement yourself as a legend.

12:14
Rooney is back! Isn’t it time the ‘experts’ got off his back? Sajni via email

He was excellent last night but he has started the season slowly and taken a while to get going. And I think part of the criticism has been because of his fitness. You can never question Rooney’s professionalism or focus – during the season he is always ready to go.

But Wayne has always had to dig deep for his fitness and as he gets older he will need to take care of himself more, especially over the summer. You always need more time coming into a season to get back to full fitness.

If I was given a month’s break then I’d only really take two weeks off and try and spend the next two getting ready. It was the same with a lot of the French players at Arsenal – they would spend two weeks off at a clinic preparing even before pre-season.

When you don’t train for a while, the pain of it can really hit you. You want to get yourself in a position where you're fit enough for the pain to become your best friend – you don’t feel it nearly as much and it just motivates you more.

The problems come when that pain starts to become your enemy. It was certainly my enemy today after my morning run!

I also worry that Wayne will be asked to do a lot of work this season. Under Alex Ferguson United always tried to have four top strikers – he was never happy going into a season unless he had plenty of firepower.

But it looks like Louis van Gaal will ask Wayne to shoulder a lot of the burden himself. If it is only Rooney and Javier Hernandez, then that is not enough for a club of United’s size.

I'm still intrigued as to what a 'cigar pass' is? As used by Martin on Match of the Day last weekend? @jofflean

I thought everybody knew! If you’re ‘big time’, then you’re the type of person who likes to walk around with a cigar.

You’re always the one giving it large or giving it the big ‘un. That’s exactly what Yaya Toure was doing with that pass for Samir Nasri’s goal.

He wasn’t even looking at the ball and he dinks one in for Nasri to polish off. That is big time, hence ‘cigar pass.’ Hopefully that clears up the matter.
