Tottenham's Christian Eriksen could be a transfer target after another excellent performance, says manager Tim Sherwood

Tim Sherwood fears Tottenham could lose Christian Eriksen in the summer after the Dane put in another scintillating performance against Fulham.

Eriksen, an £11.5million summer signing from Ajax, put two goals on a plate for Paulinho and Younes Kaboul with pinpoint balls from free kicks on either flank in Tottenham’s win on Saturday.

Sherwood claims he first spotted the winger, 22, when he was an 18-year-old playing for Denmark in a 2-1 defeat by England and tried to convince Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to sign him then.

‘I watched him for Denmark in 2011 and I rang Daniel Levy the day after and said that he needed to sign this boy,’ Sherwood said. ‘You are always fearful that someone might come and take one of your best players and Christian is certainly one.’

But they had to wait three years until they finally secured his services.

‘I don’t think he was available [at the time],’ Sherwood added. ‘I think he wanted to continue his education at Ajax and that is what happened.

‘And perhaps Daniel didn’t follow up on it as he does not follow up on every player I tell him, as there are probably too many.

‘He had a year left at Ajax. He has been great acquisition for the club and they have done well to bring him in.’

Eriksen set up the first with a ball bent from the right flank for Paulinho to tap in from half a yard.

Fulham levelled when Steve Sidwell got through their defence too easily to finish before Harry Kane headed the home side back in front.

The game was sealed when Eriksen thundered in another ball, this time from a free kick on the left flank, for Kaboul to knee in from two yards.

‘It is practice,’ Sherwood explained about Eriksen’s ability. ‘He is out there every single day.
‘I always say to the guys, “Andy Murray doesn’t just go out there and hit cross-court winners when game day comes”.

‘You need to practice it as if you don’t practice it why do you expect to do it on the big stage when the pressure is on.

‘Christian doesn’t see the pressure, doesn’t feel the pressure, as it is embedded in him as he works so hard on it every day.

‘He has just turned 22 but has the head of a 35-year-old. He knows when to speed it up and slow it down.

‘You are always fearful that someone might come and take one of your best players and Christian is certainly one.’

Fulham remain in the relegation zone and manager Felix Magath will turn to his English players to give his side the fight they need to stay up.

He said: ‘We have the English players who are used to fighting, so I think we have enough players to avoid relegation.’
