Wake up! De Gea slams United's 'sleepy' defence after horror show in defeat to Bilbao

David de Gea has accused his team-mates of 'falling asleep' during Manchester United's chastening Europa League defeat by Athletic Bilbao.

The Spanish goalkeeper produced arguably his best performance since arriving from Atletico Madrid for £17.8million last summer but was still beaten three times by his compatriots, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson's side with a 3-2 deficit to claw back in Basque country next week.

A series of defensive lapses culminated in a static Rafael da Silva failing to spot Iker Muniain stealing in to score Bilbao's third goal.

'For the third Athletic goal, the one Muniain scored, the defence was asleep,' said De Gea, who has faced his fair share of criticism this season.

'Rafael had fallen asleep. Some of my team-mates were a bit sleepy at Old Trafford. We played really badly and Athletic will beat you if you make it easy for them.

'But we'll go to the San Mames Stadium to give it another go.' De Gea's comments are particularly damning considering the fact that Ferguson urged his players to 'wake up' on the eve of the game.

Instead, the Barclays Premier League champions suffered a second successive home defeat in Europe as they were outclassed by a team trailing top-of-the-table Real Madrid by 30 points in Spain.

United look vulnerable at the back in the absence of Rio Ferdinand, while the unfamiliar central-midfield pairing of Ryan Giggs and Phil Jones were overrun at times.

Ferguson made his selection with one eye on the Premier League title race and tomorrow's home game against West Brom, but admits he may have to review his strategy in European games at Old Trafford with United winning just one of five this season and conceding 10 goals.

'We've had a bad year in Europe,' said Ferguson. 'We conceded three against Basle, two against Benfica, another three against Bilbao and two to Ajax. Maybe it is just one of those years where we are having to restock and assess how we should approach games at home.'

Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Nani are set to return for West Brom clash.
