Church stopped me being a Red Devil! Portuguese man sues over failed football career
A former lower leagues player from Portugal is taking legal action against his church who he claims scuppered his chances of playing for Manchester United.
The 46-year-old man is seeking £10million in damages from the Baptist Union in his homeland with the accusation that adopting their beliefs caused him great 'psychological harm'.
Arquimedes Nganga claims he was turned into a 'fervent evangelist' by the church when in fact he was more than capable of earning millions as a top level Premier League star.
It could have been me: A man is suing his church who he claims prevented him from playing for Manchester United
He said: 'I could definitely have had a long career in the Premier League. I see a lot of players today who I am not inferior to and perhaps better than.
'Most midfielders are either defensive or attacking but I was both. I had something new.'
Manchester United did not comment to the Metro newspaper.
Former Chelsea player Gavin Peacock is maintained a strong religious belief throughout his distinguished career, and since retiring has moved to Canada for a masters degree course in Divinity at Ambrose Seminary.
Former Northern Ireland player Phil Mulryne is also studying to become a Catholic priest.
