Manchester United keen to beat Chelsea to £53million transfer of South American star

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up the transfer of Bayern Munich midfielder and Chelsea target Arturo Vidal for the summer, according to the Daily Star.

The Chile international could get the chance to link up with his fellow countryman Alexis Sanchez if he does get a move to Old Trafford, though the Daily Star claim Bayern want as much as £53million for him.

Despite being one of the top midfielders in Europe in recent years, Vidal may now be heading towards the end of his career and looks a tad expensive at that price.

The former Juventus man will turn 31 in May and has enjoyed a long career at the top level of the game that could potentially mean a speedy decline before too long.

Arturo Vidal is a rumoured transfer target for Manchester United and Chelsea

After so long playing as a box-to-box player and using that great work rate of his to full effect, it remains to be seen how much fuel Vidal will have left in the tank, particularly in a league as demanding as the Premier League.

Still, there’s no doubt the 30-year-old could be a terrific signing for United if he were able to maintain his best form, even if only as a short-term option.

As well as that, £53m doesn’t necessarily look too much for a club like United, who have splashed the cash on a number of big names in recent years and who could do with replacing Michael Carrick as he prepares to retire at the end of the season.
