Manchester United tie down quartet of first-team stars to new contracts

Manchester United have secured the futures of four first-team players by triggering one-year contract extensions for Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Ashley Young and Daley Blind.

This looks like hugely encouraging news for the Red Devils, as they faced a potential flurry of departures from these big names, even if some haven’t always been first choice.

Marouane Fellaini is notably not among them, and that does look a cause for concern as the Belgian midfielder is also set to be out of contract in the summer.

Still, the Mirror claim Mata, Herrera, Young and Blind have all had an extra year added to their deals, which should at least help them keep their market value even if they do end up being sold.

Just yesterday, the Mirror also reported that Mata had become a transfer target for Inter Milan and that his departure could free up space for the potential signing of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil.

While it’s not immediately clear that that would be a major upgrade, Jose Mourinho could do well to cash in on Mata and reinvest that elsewhere in his squad whilst landing Ozil on a free as he heads towards being a free agent this summer as well.
