Jose Mourinho chasing major Man Utd wage increase, talks planned but history presents warning

Jose Mourinho has delivered positive results since taking charge at Man Utd last year, and now he reportedly wants to be rewarded for it.

The Portuguese tactician not only won three trophies in his first campaign at Old Trafford, but he also secured safe passage back to the Champions League.

Further, he has guided the Red Devils to a strong start to the year as they sit just five points adrift of rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, and so look well placed to launch a serious title assault while also impressing back at Europe’s top table.

In turn, it could be argued that he does deserve his wage hike, with The Mirror reporting that he’s after a £3m-a-year increase on his current £12m-a-year deal which will result in a significant financial contract offer.

It’s added that talks are planned for the New Year, and so Mourinho may well be in a strong position by then to warrant a pay increase if he can secure Man Utd’s place in the knockout stage of the Champions League as well as closing the gap on City.

Perhaps the only concern at this point is the recent issues he’s had with supporters, which as reported by Sky Sports, involved launching a staunch defence of his players and decisions, a perceived dig at them in the programme ahead of the Benfica game earlier this week as well as turning down the opportunity to meet with some supporters.

That all sounds quite negative and may influence contract talks as he would likely be smart to get the backing of the entire fanbase rather than cause issues, but ultimately if he delivers results on the pitch then from a football and financial perspective, it’s hard to disagree with Mourinho’s methods.

The other issue is that he’s never lasted more than three years at a club throughout his managerial career. He was at Porto between 2002-2004, before a three-year spell at Chelsea, two years at Inter, three years at Real Madrid and two more at Chelsea.

In turn, if United do offer fresh terms to meet his demands, they’ll surely need to be wary of Mourinho’s history of not sticking around for the duration of previous deals and that could be a concern with the money being touted.
