Arsenal on his mind?

West Brom manager Tony Pulis admits Jonny Evans’ form this season has been affected by interest in him from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City during the summer transfer window.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the Gunners made a late approach to bring Evans to the Emirates Stadium as Arsene Wenger looked for options to strengthen at the back.

BBC Sport also reported at the time that City had two bids rejected for Evans, while Leicester City were also credited with trying to prise the Northern Ireland international away from the Hawthorns.

Pulis says the saga has distracted Evans after some unconvincing form so far this season, but was also quoted in the Daily Mirror as saying he has no problem with the player as he provided some update on the prospect of him signing a new contract with the club.

‘There was a bid from Leicester and it was left to the club. As it was with Arsenal and Man City,’ Pulis said.

‘Would Jonny have gone to Leicester? I don’t know, you’d have to speak to him. As the club didn’t accept the bid, it didn’t happen.

‘I think the window affects players. It affected both him and Nacer Chadli. It does affect them, no question.

New contract for Jonny Evans?

‘I don’t think anything’s going to happen with him for a while. If they are talking (about a new contract), they’re talking.

‘But I haven’t got a problem with him.’

West Brom take on Leicester in the Premier League this evening, and could do with Evans putting in a better performance as they look to end a run of five league games without a win.
