Tottenham set to shatter club record transfer fee, £42m deal agreed for first summer signing

Tottenham are reportedly on the brink of securing their first summer signing after a club-record £42m fee was agreed for Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez.

Spurs fans have been left disappointed with the club’s lack of transfer activity this summer, with their rivals all strengthening and putting the pressure on Mauricio Pochettino to keep up the pace.

While the alternative has been developing their own with a number of top young talents at the club, The Guardian report that Tottenham are now finally set to make their first summer signing.

It will come at a price though as they’ll break the club’s transfer record to sign Sanchez, with the 21-year-old Colombian defender costing the Premier League side £42m.

Sanchez enjoyed an impressive debut season in Europe last year, guiding Ajax to the Europa League final as he impressed both with his defensive skills and ability on the ball.

His versatility will also be a key factor for Pochettino, and he will undoubtedly welcome him to London with open arms as he seemingly has a bright future ahead of him and will only improve under the guidance of the Tottenham boss.

It’s claimed by the Guardian that Tottenham officials travelled to Amsterdam on Monday to wrap up a deal, and it’s reported that they’ll pay £28m up front, with £14m in addition in performance-related bonuses.

Further, it’s expected that Sanchez will sign a five-year contract, and despite interest from Chelsea, he has now opted for a move to Tottenham where he’ll hope to be a major part of their success moving forward.

Time will tell if there are more new arrivals to follow at Spurs, but after Kyle Walker was sold to Man City for £50m earlier this summer, as noted in the report, it will be a relief for supporters to see a new face come in and strengthen the defence.
