According to the Guardian, Wenger is hoping to select Walcott again soon, and feels he needs to overcome his nerves and show that he is ready to contribute defensively and not shy away from tackles.

Arsenal play against Walcott’s old club Southampton on New Year’s Day, and although it remains to be seen if the England international will make the starting lineup, Wenger does appear keen to get him playing again soon.

The 25-year-old was in fine form last season and in the campaign prior to that one, but has seen his career repeatedly slowed down by injury problems and spells out of the team.

A whole year out of action may now be taking its toll on Walcott, with Wenger admitting he is nervous about his return.

“He has been out for one year,” Wenger said. “He has to go for contact and today, the game does not forgive you any lack of contact or defensive focus. We have to get that.

“He is certainly a bit edgy as he has been out for so long. About the first tackle? Yes, of course. You must have that in your mind and have to go through that.”
