Manchester United are among the teams believed to have declared an interest in Benfica’s Argentine winger Nicolas Gaitan, who is valued at £35m by the Portuguese giants.

Reports in the Daily Express have confirmed that Gaitan could be set to join the summer exodus from Benfica, with Liverpool and French side AS Monaco also having scouted the 26-year-old in recent months.

Portuguese reports suggest that both United and Monaco have put offers on the table for the player, although at this stage neither club is willing to meet the player’s huge buyout clause.

Meanwhile, the player has repeatedly stated his desire to stay in Lisbon, and has previously confirmed that he will only leave the club if it helps them with their financial issues.

Earlier this year Gaitan said: “At the moment I am totally focussed on playing for Benfica since I have a contract with them. But I wouldn’t mind playing in a different league and, more importantly, to put the club first to help with their serious problems.

“Now I am talking about a purely hypothetical situation but if there is a serious formal proposal that will suit the club then I will explore all options.”

But following a raft of sales it seems that the Express believes that Gaitan is now looking to turn the tables on the Eagles by pushing for a pay rise following a season in which he scored seven goals from midfield.
