Jose Mourinho has set sights on Bayern Munich forward Mario Gomez as he looks to bring in a second German international this summer according to The Times.

Having completed an £18m deal to finally land Bayer Leverkusen forward Andre Schurrle the returning Blues boss wants to strengthen his attack by signing experienced forward Gomez, who could well be set for an Allianz Arena exit.

The 27 year old former Stuttgart ace saw his first team spot handed to Mario Mandzukic last season, with the Croatian impressing throughout the campaign after initially being signed to fill in for the then injured Gomez. The arrival of Pep Guardiola could well see another striking addition brought in which could further compromise the powerful German’s place in the Bayern Munich pecking order.

Chelsea see Gomez as a more viable cost effective option to Napoli goal machine Edinson Cavani, who could well cost the West London side upwards of £50m, whereas a move for Gomez could perhaps work out as half that outlay.

Mourinho will certainly be looking to improve an attack that last term relied on Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, two players who struggled for form in 2012/13.

Gomez is a proven goal-scorer and a player who’s physicality could well make him a success in the Premier League. Despite being handed just 11 starts in all competitions last season the Bayern Munich man still managed to score 19 goals.
