Huddersfield fought back from behind to beat Birmingham in extra-time and book a home tie against Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

With the replay locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the Premier League visitors took command with quick goals from Steve Mounie and Rajiv van La Parra before Tom Ince added a fourth.

Che Adams had fired the Championship side ahead before Town levelled through Marc Roberts' scrappy own goal.

Town will host United on 17 February.

It represents another opportunity for Huddersfield to beat United for the second time at the John Smith's Stadium this season, following a 2-1 win in October which ended the visitors' unbeaten run and made the first dent in their Premier League title push.

More importantly, this victory at St Andrew's ended an alarming run of results for David Wagner's side and one which the German will hope can restore some confidence.

Town have sunk into the top-flight relegation zone following five straight league defeats and face a battle to avoid an instant return to the Championship.

"We are happy to have won as it is a win we required to build up the momentum for the Premier League," Wagner said.

"Fitness wise we are at top level and it lifts the confidence playing in the league."

Huddersfield's season back on track?

Huddersfield's quality eventually shone through against a Birmingham side which has enjoyed a resurgence in recent weeks, moving out of the Championship relegation zone following a run of just one defeat in six matches.

Preserving their league status remains the priority for both clubs this season but the lure of a glamorous home tie against one of the biggest clubs in the country provided plenty of incentive.

Not that you would have guessed it, however, after an insipid first half containing little goalmouth action.

Adams' strike lifted the atmosphere among the home fans on a chilly night in a half-empty St Andrew's - but also served to jolt Huddersfield into life.

Instantly the visitors played with more pace and purpose as they chased the tie, quickly earning a reward within eight minutes when Blues keeper David Stockdale made a mess of Ince's speculative shot and the ball was bundled over the line by Roberts as he tried to hack clear.

Huddersfield were galvanised by that equaliser, dominating the remainder of normal time as Birmingham were largely pinned back in their own half.

Stockdale partially redeemed himself for his part in the equaliser by stopping Scott Malone and Ince in normal time, but was powerless to deny the visitors as they gained control early in extra-time through Mounie's close-range header and Van La Parra's opportunist strike.

That knocked the stuffing out of Blues, Ince drilling a fourth into the bottom corner as Town eased into the fifth round for the second successive season.

Terriers on a run in the cup?

'The whole town will be happy' - post-match reaction

Birmingham City manager Steve Cotterill:

"For 90 minutes, we did well and kept it tight to half-time. We then opened up, had a different set-up in midfield and got the goal.

"But, after that, we were hanging on in there and it was always going to be tough for us in extra time. They were too much for us.

"We were dead on our feet in the end. We've had an unbelievable schedule. We've played 11 games since 23 December."

Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner:

"I was so pleased with the way we played, I actually enjoyed having to play an extra half an hour.

"I've praised the togetherness and character of this dressing room so many times and they showed it tonight. It could have easily gone differently after they scored the first goal, but they reacted in the right way.

"Tuesday night against a Championship side under floodlights is never going to be easy, but we played some decent football all over the park.

"And we're very happy to be playing Manchester United at home again, in the fifth round of the FA Cup. The whole town will be happy about that."

    Good for them David Wagner, is a good manager and a decent run in the cup will help confidence for Premier League survival. Huddersfield under Wagner have played some good stuff this season and deserve to stay in the P.L.

    Huddersfield v Utd? I always love to see the underdog win in the FA Cup, however on this occasion I don't think it will happen - Huddersfield will just edge it and go through.

    ...hopefully this will galvanise HTAFC to abandon the ultra defensive tactics of recent games, and play with more emphasis on attack.
    ...it's been patently obvious these last couple of months, that the defensive set-up just wasn't working....and we ARE actually quite a good side when we play with more adventure and freedom....

    Ince looked the part because maybe this is more his level. If he doesn't make/take his chances in the next few Prem games that'll prove it. A good result, well deserved, but unless Mourinho underestimates the Terriers, on current form I can only see a Man U win

    Think this could be a proper cup tie & United better be ready. Huddersfield tried to kick us off the park on Sat without much punishment & they'll probs get even more licence in this one.

    Saturday we cruised it, playing round them most of the game. But at their place they deservedly turned us over & will be dangerous again if we aren't at it.

    Should have a decent allocation. Bring it on!

    Town deserved their win and I want them to go all the way and win it. The League is the most important though and they need to stay up...but key to having a chance of any of this happening is to retain the services of Wagner. We must keep him full stop. UTT
