Premier League: Tottenham draw with West Brom, Man Utd beat Brighton

Ashley Young secured a scrappy three points for Manchester United

Tottenham needed a late Harry Kane goal to rescue a point against managerless West Brom in the Premier League, while second-placed Manchester United scraped past Brighton at Old Trafford.

Salomon Rondon's early goal at Wembley looked like it would give Gary Megson victory in his first game as caretaker charge of Albion, following Tony Pulis' sacking.

But Kane's 74th-minute equaliser saw fourth-placed Spurs avoid a third defeat in four league games.

Man Utd needed a deflected Ashley Young strike, which went down as a Lewis Dunk own goal, to beat a resolute Brighton and move within five points of City, who travel to Huddersfield on Sunday (16:00 GMT).

Liverpool and Chelsea failed to make up significant ground on City, as Mohamed Salah's 15th goal of the season for the Reds was cancelled out by Willian late on in a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Watford won back-to-back league games for the first time this season with a resounding 3-0 win at Newcastle - Will Hughes and Andre Gray scoring either side of a DeAndre Yedlin own goal.

Mamadou Sakho's injury-time winner gave Roy Hodgson his second league win as Crystal Palace boss, in a 2-1 victory over Stoke.

But it was not enough to lift Palace off the bottom of the table, as they sit a point behind Swansea after the Welsh side played out a goalless draw at home to Bournemouth.

Championship leaders Wolves made it five wins on the bounce by dismantling Bolton 5-1.

And there were wins for automatic promotion chasers Aston Villa, who overcame Ipswich Town 2-0, and Bristol City, who recovered from going 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Hull.

Both games in the Scottish Premiership ended in draws, with third-placed Hibernian held 1-1 at Hamilton and Hearts and Ross County goalless.

    Gone are the days when you had a Cantona to capture the imagination or a title challenge which you couldn't get off your mind (Newcastle- Manchester United), nowadays you just hear the words 1-0, draws, goal-less, scraped,scrappy, bus, track back with the occasional spotlight on the ref to deflect what we see on the pitch..even second thoughts about watching MOTD highlights abt cautious football.

    The awkward moment went you realise that a Burnley win (against Arsenal) will see them break into the top 4, leap-frogging Liverpool and Spurs just before the festive period.

    Credit where it is due though! Burnley has the third best defence in the league and most likely the best pound:point ratio going!

    @5 There is no need to do the full name unless there are two teams with almost the same name. Manchester United and Manchester City, for example, need clarifying from being both called Manchester. But Hull is the only team in the league (and football leagues) and requires no further wording.

    Re 10 I've been very impressed with Watford and their manager Silva. Big test for them on Tuesday against United bu they are playing great football. If Aguero or Jesus had been up front for them against Newcastle they could have had 5/6 goals as Andre Grey missed a host of great chances On a sour note the FA should bring a disrepute charge against money mad Alan Sugar.     @15....Hull is the name of the City....the football club is Hull City (AFC).....its just laziness on the BBC's part......Wolverhampton Wanderers are the football club who play in Wolverhampton.....I think you get my drift.

    Perhaps unimportant but when 'Derby play Cardiff' its actually Derby County playing Cardiff City......its just a 'bugbear' thats all.........

    What happened? Same results as usual. Top 6 still in the top 6. Rest of the clubs plying their trade till a rich business owner buys their club.

    All in all?! Nothing of any interest happened in the slightest. More excitement these days happens in the lower leagues. Hopefully the plastic fans carry on supporting the EPL clubs.

    @8 Baz. You're right, Manchester City are the best to watch by far but I think Watford are rapidly improving and fast becoming the second most attractive team in the PL. I hope this is borne out when we give it a go in the return fixture at the Etihad Stadium.

    @23...the BBC doesnt have the 'rights' to Championship matches so dont care?...its a simple as that......if you support any football league club its not worth bothering with the BBC...they are more bothered about the Womens Champions League........

    @19 Shhhh don't tell the plastic fans that have supported their top 6 club since EPL started. We need those glory hunters to remain with clubs like MU and Chelsea etc so the test of us can enjoy the game which money can't buy yet 👍

    Err Sunderland gain a glorious victory and have nearly half the spectators at Burton and the Beeb doesn't mention it above. As disingenuous as BT and Sky pretending they are friends of away travelling fans - they want us to stay at home and subscribe - we're not suckers dopes. Compliments of the season.
