Alex Scott: Tearful defender explains England retirement

England and Arsenal defender Alex Scott has retired from international football.

The 32-year-old right-back is the second most-capped player in England history, with 140 appearances.

She has played at three World Cups and four European Championships since her debut in 2004, scoring 12 international goals during her 13-year career.

England manager Mark Sampson described her as "one of the greatest players to ever wear the England shirt".

"Today is the end of a chapter as I turn the lights out on my England career," Scott said.

"This decision has not come lightly, but sometimes the right choice is the one that involves some sacrifice," she added.

"My dream as a little girl was to one day pull on the Three Lions shirt and represent my country. I am so proud and humbled that I managed to do just that."

    Crikey... if you're not interested in a story on the sports page just how difficult is it to exert your little swiping finger and skim on by? By clicking the headline and wading on in here with predictable adolescent swipes and sniggers you just expose yourself as a rather sad and lonely misogynist desperate to unleash a bit of bitterness given half a chance.

    Happy retirement Alex, fantastic achievement to reach so many caps regardless of whether more games are played or not. Brilliant player.

    It's a shame many people can't appreciate a sportsperson who has been good enough to play 140 times for their country and appear at international tournaments. Simply because it's a female brings out all these sexist comments by Neanderthals. Commitment, dedication, sacrifice and hard work are nit monopolised by men. Get over yourselves.

    Love the way the knuckle draggers can find some time in their day to purposely post comments that dig at her achievements. I'm sure all of them have 140 England caps and an MBE as well.
    I'm really unsure why some people are just happy to hate these days?? It has to come down to their own insecurity surely? That she has done more than they ever will?!

    You was the first England Ladies name that I can say I remembered and now I can name most of them now as I watch England Ladies all the time thanks to you and the BBC for supporting the women's game.

    VanZan however, has shown us he is incapable of thinking like a human being.

    Its his upbringing you see... bad attitudes are handed down through the generations and his are appalling, so his forbears werent nice people at all!

    Hugely sad to see so many people are posting horrible comments or disliking posts with positive comments. What is wrong with people like that? What is so wrong in your lives that you need to do this?
    Is it just because she's a woman? Does her being successful/talented/knowledgeable about football, make you that insecure? For those that ask 'who?', she is someone that has done more than you have.

    BBC could you please create a separate page for Women's Football.

    It would be better than putting these articles in with the Men's Football in the vague hope that they will get more hits from people clicking on them by accident.
