Tyler Walker's goal condemned Newcastle to their earliest League Cup exit in 27 years

Nottingham Forest scored in extra time to hand Newcastle a third consecutive defeat in a thrilling EFL Cup second-round tie at St James' Park.

Tyler Walker got the final touch on Jack Hobbs' header in the 97th minute to help Forest knock out their Premier League hosts.

Aleksandar Mitrovic put Newcastle ahead early on before Forest striker Jason Cummings scored twice in two minutes.

Rolando Aarons equalised with a fine drive from outside the box.

However, lax defending from Rafael Benitez's side saw Hobbs rise unmarked from a corner to head on goal, with Walker stealing in to deflect the ball past former Forest goalkeeper Karl Darlow.

They were moments of quality from the hosts. Mitrovic's opener was angled powerfully and Aarons drove at pace at the Forest defence before working the ball onto his weaker right foot and firing high past Jordan Smith.

But a side featuring 10 changes from the team that lost 1-0 to fellow promoted side Huddersfield at the weekend were again defensively frail and at times struggled alarmingly against Championship opponents.

For Forest's first, Zach Clough collected a cut-back in space before directing a cross towards Cummings, who easily got between two Newcastle defenders to head in.

Cummings, who joined from Scottish side Hibernian in the summer, then ran on to a ball forward to deftly lift it over the onrushing Darlow.

    Thing is, Ashley can't really sack Benitez cos everyone knows he's a quality manager too good for Newcastle.

    Everyone knows that the reason Newcastle are struggling is because the players aren't EPL standard and their isn't enough depth in the squad.

    So really everyone knows Ashley is the one at fault. He either has to spend some money or leave the club!

    Simple truth is that Forest put out a team who wanted to win the game and Newcastle didn't.

    A dangerous game to play when on a run of losses, no matter how short.

    Good on Forest, who may finally have turned a corner under new owners and with a talented manager like Warburton at the helm. Considering the history of the club it's a shame they've been a bottom half Championship team for so many years. Would love them to at least challenge this campaign.

    Newcastle may have a big stadium, and a big name manager, but they have not been a big club for so long these results are now the norm and hardly headline news. got to be worth a punt on relegation again.

    Newcastle are, currently, a Championship side playing in the Premier League. It's not as if it's hard to see.

    If Newcastle don't invest in their squad there are not 3 teams worse than them this time around.

    They will go exactly the same way as Boro did last season and for the same reason.

    People talk about Newcastle fans being delusional. Majority aren't. We want a squad to compete. If we're offered 17th now then we'd take it. If we're still there in 2+ years time then that'd be frustrating. We can't understand why, with one of the best managers around, when we get out of one of the most difficult leagues that we don't invest to stay up.It's a worst squad now than when we went down

    Rafa at times doesn't help himself win games, everytime we are trailing, he will still persist on one striker up front why not change it to a 442 and just attack, some of the players he picks at times baffles me too, this squad is not good enough whatsoever and we are certain to go down with this lot.

    I'm sure Benitez understands the difference between players good enough to win promotion to the PL and players good enough to keep them there . Sadly Ashley doesn't - or he can't afford to finance a proper PL side. Newcastle are not buying the players they want/need, but the players they can afford to buy & pay. But the squad is inadequate & its only going to end one way. Rafa will leave soon.

    No ambition from Newcastle.

    Surely, for a tie like this, in a cup that could even be (as an outside chance) winnable, you'd pick a stronger team.

    It's not like your best players can't play 2 games in a week.

    Focusing so much on the league has deprived their fans of the much-needed adventure of a cup run.

    Too many owners nowadays are immoral odious little napoleons who own clubs either as a vanity project or as a cash cow. Until Newcastle get rid of the fat man the club will be divvied and to roughly quote Lincoln, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." As a Leeds fan worn down by years of miss-ownership, Newcastle have my sympathies. Infighting will always lead to relegation.

    Forest have looked dangerous at the start of the season for years and then fallen away drastically - maybe this is the year they actually do well in the Championship.

    Ashley will be happy, he will be hoping for an early exit from FA Cup as well so that Rafa can concentrate on keeping Newcastle up and MA can pocket the EPL payment - the limit of his ambition.

    It's a shame, because you want teams with great stadiums, fans and atmospheres in the EPL but I don't see where Newcastle will get the 38 points to survive. Unless a couple of teams have a nightmare season then they'll go down, replaced by a team with 20,000 gates and a good centre half.
