Wayne Rooney replaced by Michael Carrick as Manchester United club captain as Everton switch moves closer

Wayne Rooney has been stripped of the Manchester United club captaincy as his move back to Everton edges closer.

United’s 253-goal all-time leading scorer has been replaced by Michael Carrick, with Ander Herrera named as his No 2, according to The Sun.

The switch back to Goodison Park will end Rooney's 13-year stint at Old Trafford as Jose Mourinho remodels his squad for the forthcoming season.

Carrick remains part of Mourinho's plans after signing a one-year extension to the end of the 2017-18 season.

Rooney was spotted at gym on Merseyside yesterday ahead of his expected move back to his boyhood club, where he is expected to earn £250,000-a-week.

He had offers from clubs in the Chinese Super League and options in the MLS, but re-joining the Toffees means he doesn't have to uproot his family.
