Southampton would be ‘foolish’ not to pursue deal for ‘available’ Yohan Cabaye, talkSPORT told

Southampton would be “foolhardy” not to attempt to sign reportedly available playmaker Yohan Cabaye from Paris Saint-Germain, talkSPORT have been told.

The impending departures of Saints duo Morgan Schneiderlin and Nathaniel Clyne is likely to hand manager Ronald Koeman a healthy kitty to strengthen his squad in the summer transfer window.

Former Newcastle man Cabaye, who has been linked with a return to St James' Park as well as Tottenham, West Ham and Crystal Palace, is thought to be one of the midfielders Southampton have shown an interest in as a possible replacement for Frenchman Schneiderlin, who is set to agree a £25million switch to Manchester United this week.

And while talkSPORT's man on the south coast, Alex Crook, believes Koeman may be eyeing a cheaper alternative, in Feyenoord playmaker Jordy Clasie - who could be available for a cut-price £10million - he also believes it would be a mistake not to attempt to bring a player of Cabaye’s quality to St Mary’s.

“I don’t believe Cabaye is Southampton’s top target,” he told Hawksbee and Jacobs.

“Koeman is a long-term admirer of Jordy Clasie, a midfielder he knows well from his time at Feyenoord, he’s the one he really wants to bring in to replace Schneiderlin.

“But it think it would be foolhardy for Southampton, if a player of Cabaye’s ability is available, that they’re not milking around.

“Ronald Koeman is a manager who can attract star players, that hasn’t been a major issue and they can offer Europa League football now which also makes them an attractive proposition.

“But they’re still keen not to pay over the odds for players.”
