Manchester United news: Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial ruled out of Europa League clash, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns

Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial will be absent for Manchester United's Europa League last-16 second leg against FC Rostov, but top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic is in line to start.

Both Rooney and Martial missed Monday's FA Cup quarter-final at Chelsea through injury, and Jose Mourinho confirmed both will be sidelined on Thursday despite the latter training on the eve of the match.

Martial, Luke Shaw and Bastian Schweinsteiger trained away from the main group, which included Ibrahimovic after he missed the trip to Stamford Bridge through domestic suspension.

Asked about Martial's fitness, Mourinho said: "He was injured for the Chelsea match, he couldn't be selected for the Chelsea match.

"If you are injured for the Monday night game, it's because you are injured for the Tuesday morning training session and if you are injured for the Tuesday morning training session it's not because of (what he does) today that you can be able to play on Thursday so he is out of my mind.

"I don't think about him. We have the same players in the last match plus (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic returning for the Europa League."

There was no sign of Rooney at Wednesday's training session after he sustained a knock in a training-ground collision with Phil Jones, and Mourinho confirmed that he is still receiving treatment.

"He's injured," Mourinho said.

"It was some kick in his knee area so he can't even come out to the pitch. He stays inside with the medical department."

Ibrahimovic is available because his three-game ban only applies to domestic fixtures and the Swede's presence at least offers Mourinho an alternative in attack.

Marcus Rashford played that role at Stamford Bridge despite suffering from a bout of illness.

Ibrahimovic’s return will be the only change to the squad that lost Monday's ill-tempered clash at Chelsea.

A bad night in London - having lost 1-0 with ten men - only got worse as issues with their flight back meant United instead had to battle traffic on the M6, getting back to Manchester at around 4am.

"We had one gift and we thought one gift was enough," Mourinho said. "But then we had the second gift and we thought that was too much. And then we had third gift.

"The first gift was to play Monday night, the second gift was to play with 10 men and then the third gift was to have a promenade on the M6.

"But we are professionals, so the next morning we were here to train.

"Today the same and tomorrow we go with everything we have, and I think the fans will give us this little bit of extra energy.

"So we believe that tomorrow we can cope with the situation and fight to be in the quarter-final."

Provisional squad: De Gea, Romero, Valencia, Jones, Rojo, Smalling, Bailly, Blind, Darmian, Shaw, Young, Carrick, Herrera, Fellaini, Schweinsteiger, Pogba, Mata, Lingard, Mkhitaryan, Ibrahimovic, Rashford.
