Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal can’t handle big name stars, talkSPORT told

Manchester United fans have been warned not to expect world class signings while Louis van Gaal is in charge - because the Dutchman can't handle big name stars!

The Old Trafford faithful are angry that the transfer window closed without the stellar signings they were promised, with names like Neymar, Thomas Muller and Marco Reus being linked with the club during the summer.

Instead, the only deadline day deal saw teenager Anthony Martial arrive from Monaco for an eye-watering £36m fee.

United did splash out almost £100m during the summer, taking Van Gaal's total spending at Old Trafford to almost a quarter of a billion pounds. But Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan, who knows Van Gaal as well as anyone, insists his relationship with his major players often defines the season.

“Van Gaal is the star. That is his nature and character - not that he wants to be the star, but he wants to be the one who knows best,” Van der Kraan told Hawksbee and Jacobs.

“It seems to go wrong every time he buys big because, when he buys big stars, there are confrontations. They arrive with an ego and he thinks he has to bring them down.

"There is Van Gaal first, and then the players. There are numerous examples of when a big player comes into training and you think: 'how well this player accept this treatment?'”

Van Der Kraal's insight appears to have some weight, as Van Gaal struggled at both AZ Alkmaar and Bayern Munich after considerable spending sprees and his failure to fully integrate supposed 'star' names.
