Mesut Ozil has ended months of speculation by signing a new three-and-a-half-year contract at Arsenal.

The Germany international had entered the final six months of his previous deal and would have been able to join any of his suitors on a free this summer but has opted to commit the peak years of his career to the north London club.

‘We’re delighted to announce that Mesut Ozil has signed a new long-term contract with us,’ an official statement from Arsenal reads.

‘Mesut has won the Emirates FA Cup three times since joining us in 2013, making 182 appearances, scoring 36 goals and racking up 61 assists.

‘He’s a World Cup winner too, of course, lifting that trophy with Germany in 2014.

‘Congratulations Mesut – here’s to many more years of success.’

Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and an unnamed Chinese Super League club had registered interest in the 29-year-old but Ozil is said to have been convinced to stay by Arsenal’s January recruitment drive which saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan arrive from Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United, respectively.

Reports earlier this week claimed Ozil will earn £350,000-a-week before tax, which will make him the top earner at Arsenal.

The Germany playmaker has penned a three-and-a-half-year deal which ties him to the Gunners until June 2021.

Ozil, who joined from Real Madrid for £42.5 million in 2013, is currently in his fifth season with Arsenal and has helped the club win three FA Cup trophies.
