Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says Alexis Sanchez was ‘dropping too deep’ in the side’s 2-0 defeat against Tottenham at Wembley.

The Chilean endured a Premier League debut for the Reds to forget after Mauricio Pochettino’s side ran riot against the Red Devils.

Sanchez started the game on the left flank before moving moved into the middle for the second half but neither position brought the best out of the former Arsenal star.

Mourinho said he was pleased with Sanchez’s effort but said the Chilean was dropping too deep to retrieve the ball in the second half, which played into Spurs’ hands.

‘In the second half I try to give him a position where he could be more close to Lukaku,’ said Mourinho.

‘But he felt the need to drop too much and he was dropping too much to try to organise.

‘He gave everything with a good effort and it’s a good feeling to me to know that he’s available with this spirit.’

United now trail Manchester City by fifteen points and their focus now will be on consolidating a place in the top four.

Champions Chelsea lost 3-0 to Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge but Liverpool’s win means they’re only three points behind Mourinho’s men.
