Alexis Sanchez’s first Premier League appearance for Manchester United ended in disappointment as the Red Devils were comprehensively beaten by Tottenham at Wembley.

United travelled to north London on Wednesday evening having won their last three league matches, but they fell behind within 11 seconds as Christian Eriksen latched onto a flick from Harry Kane to fire past David de Gea.

England defender Phil Jones turned Kieran Trippier’s cross into his own net later in the first-half as Spurs doubled their lead. Both teams wasted chances after the break as the game finished 2-0.

Sanchez, having joined United from Arsenal earlier in the month, enjoyed his United debut in the FA Cup as he provided an assist in the 4-0 thrashing over League Two outfit Yeovil Town.

But he was less effective against Spurs, struggling to make an impact for Jose Mourinho’s side and also receiving some punishment from the Tottenham players.

In the 85th minute, Sanchez attempted to dash pass Dele Alli only for the England star to chop him down with a blatant foul. He was shown a yellow card and taken off just minutes later.

The incident led a number of Arsenal fans to briefly switch allegiances and praise a player from their north London rivals for the challenge on Sanchez.
