Arsene Wenger believes Mesut Ozil’s recent performances suggest he is ready to commit his long-term future to Arsenal.

The Germany international has entered the final six months of his current contract and could leave on a personally lucrative free transfer in the summer.

Ozil has this week seen Alexis Sanchez depart for Manchester United, who are paying the Chile international around £500,000-a-week.

The 29-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford himself, but Wenger believes his current spellbinding form indicates he will choose a different career path to that of his now former teammate Sanchez.

‘Our intention is to keep Ozil at the club, hopefully we will do that very soon,’ said Wenger.

‘Not close enough to be optimistic and not far enough to be pessimistic.

‘The vibes I get from his commitment, his focus, his desire – he behaves like someone who is ready to commit.

‘But after that negotiations are what they are. We are not close enough to tell you yes, he will do it.’
